S&P/ TSX Composite finishes 1.3 percent higher as jobs miss lifts gold

The S&P/TSX Composite finished October 9 at 35,587 points, up 1.3 percent, as a sharp Canadian employment decline reduced expectations for near-term Bank of Canada rate increases. Investing.com recorded a 35,322-point open, a 35,620-point high and a 35,322-point low.
Canada lost 68,300 jobs in September after a 41,700 decline in August, while the unemployment rate rose to 6.5 percent, Reuters reported. Economists had expected a gain of 9,200 jobs, according to National Newswatch.
Gold and materials gain 2.7 percent
Gold and materials each rose 2.7 percent at midday, while information technology gained 2.1 percent. Telecoms fell 2.9 percent, health care declined 0.7 percent and consumer staples lost 0.2 percent, Baystreet reported. Spot gold rose 1.27 percent to USD 4,186.13 an ounce, while Brent crude fell 1.1 percent to USD 103.16 a barrel, according to Investing.com.
What comes next
The Toronto Stock Exchange will be closed Monday, October 12, for the Canadian Thanksgiving holiday and will resume regular trading Tuesday, October 13, TMX Group said.
