- The SMI finished October 29 at 14,782.27 points, up 1.4 percent.
- Swiss blue-chip shares reached a new record during the morning session.
- Novartis, Nestle and Roche supported the index, while Amrize initially fell after lowering its full-year outlook.
The SMI finished Thursday's trading session at 14,782.27 points, up 1.4 percent. The closing level and 17:30 CET timestamp were reported by finanzen.ch, which identifies SIX Financial Information as the source of its market data.
Defensive shares set the tone
The benchmark had already reached a new high during the morning. Swissinfo, citing Keystone-SDA, reported that Novartis was up 2 percent at around 9:50 a.m., while Nestle gained 1 percent and Roche rose 0.5 percent. The report said the SMI briefly moved to just below 14,732 points, surpassing its previous high.
The market's strength was concentrated in large, comparatively defensive companies. Swissinfo attributed the broader rally to a shift in investor sentiment, with money moving away from technology shares and toward companies viewed as more resilient during economic slowdowns. The high index weights of pharmaceutical and food companies give such moves particular importance for the SMI.
Earnings create mixed stock moves
Corporate news nevertheless produced significant dispersion beneath the index level. Amrize fell by just over 5 percent in morning trading after disappointing quarterly figures and a downward revision to its full-year forecast, according to Swissinfo. The same report noted that recent gains in Roche, Novartis and Nestle had been important contributors to the benchmark's advance.
The combination of a record-setting index level and uneven individual-stock performance is relevant for investors tracking the SMI. A rise in the capitalization-weighted benchmark does not mean that all 20 constituents moved in the same direction, particularly when a small group of large companies has an outsized influence on the index.
Benchmark scope for investors
SIX describes the SMI as Switzerland's leading blue-chip equity index, comprising the 20 largest and most liquid equities from the SPI and covering approximately 75 percent of Swiss equity-market capitalization. Because it is calculated in real time and is market-capitalization weighted, heavyweight moves can materially shape the daily result.
