- Technology, semiconductor, cooling-system and PCB stocks led the selloff as investors worried about delays to US AI data-center deployment.
- Foreign institutional investors recorded a net sale of NT$102.46 billion, while turnover reached NT$926.02 billion.
The Taiwan Weighted Index, or TAIEX, closed at 41,574.72 on Thursday, November 5, after falling 1,374.19 points, or 3.20%, from Wednesday's close of 42,948.91. The index reached an intraday low of 41,513.57 and ended at its lowest level since July 31. Focus Taiwan reported that turnover totaled NT$926.02 billion.
AI infrastructure concerns drive selling
According to Focus Taiwan, dealers linked the broad retreat to concerns that the deployment of artificial-intelligence data centers in the United States could be delayed. Those concerns followed steep losses in the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index overnight and intensified selling in Taiwan's technology-heavy market.
The pressure extended across technology heavyweights, cooling-system providers and printed circuit board makers. MediaTek fell 6.86% to NT$3,460, Delta Electronics declined 7.38% to NT$1,130 and Hon Hai Precision Industry lost 2.08% to NT$235. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. fell 0.88% to NT$2,240, after initially helping to cushion the market.
Foreign selling adds to volatility
Foreign institutional investors sold a net NT$102.46 billion on the main board, which the Taiwan Stock Exchange identified as the 10th-largest one-day net foreign sell-off on record. Financial, textile, cement and rubber shares showed comparatively greater resilience, but the retreat remained broad across technology-related groups.
Taiwan News also reported that margin investors were facing increased forced selling, while outstanding margin loans had not yet declined significantly. That leaves the market vulnerable to additional volatility if leveraged positions continue to be unwound. The report noted that financial and biotechnology shares were among the areas that resisted the broader decline.
Near-term market focus
The selloff reflects a reassessment of the timing and returns of AI infrastructure spending rather than evidence that demand for related components has disappeared. Investors are likely to continue watching US technology markets, data-center policy developments, foreign fund flows and changes in margin balances as they assess whether selling pressure is easing.
