The Taiwan Weighted (TAIEX) closed sharply lower on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, as technology stocks came under renewed selling pressure. The index ended at 43,307.54 points, down 1,612.60 points or 3.59 percent from Monday's close of 44,920.14. According to Focus Taiwan, the decline was the seventh-largest single-session point fall in the index's history.

Technology shares lead the decline

The sell-off followed another weak session for US technology stocks and reflected persistent concerns about the scale of AI infrastructure investment and the time required for cloud providers to generate adequate returns. Focus Taiwan reported that the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 3.37 percent and the Nasdaq fell 1.07 percent overnight.

Semiconductor shares were among the main pressure points. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. fell 1.50 percent to TWD 2,295.00 and accounted for about 280 points of the TAIEX decline, according to the report. MediaTek dropped 7.43 percent to TWD 3,675.00, while ASE Technology Holding declined 8.61 percent to TWD 816.00. Nanya Technology fell the daily limit of 10 percent after losses among South Korean memory-chip companies added pressure to Taiwanese peers.

Broad selling increases market risk

The weakness extended beyond technology. The financial sector fell 2.54 percent, while selected defensive shares such as Uni-President Enterprises and Formosa Oilseed Processing posted modest gains. The index moved between 43,191.58 and 44,614.64 points during the session, and turnover increased to TWD 928.06 billion from TWD 799.69 billion on Monday.

Foreign institutional investors sold a net TWD 107.31 billion of shares on the main board, as reported by Focus Taiwan. The combination of a large index decline, higher turnover and broad pressure across technology and financial stocks points to a pronounced reduction in risk appetite, although it does not by itself establish how long the correction will last.

Investors await further signals

Market participants are likely to continue watching US technology performance, AI investment expectations and geopolitical as well as US midterm-election risks. The next direction will depend on whether selling in high-growth semiconductor names persists or whether lower prices attract renewed demand.
