The VIX closed at 17.52 points on October 27, down 0.87 points or 4.7 percent, Cboe data showed. An AI-led technology rally and lower oil prices eased pressure across US stocks, Reuters reported.
Boeing fell 9.7 percent after posting a larger-than-expected third-quarter loss. Xylem dropped 12.4 percent after cutting its full-year forecast, while Royal Caribbean rose 6.5 percent after raising its full-year profit forecast, Reuters said.
Why is the VIX down today?
Anthropic's planned initial public offering revived demand for chip stocks. Reuters said easing oil prices also reduced inflation pressure as markets focused on Middle East peace negotiations.
The S&P 500 rose 0.60 percent to 7,722.60 at 4:34 p.m. ET, while WTI crude stood at USD 100.20, down 1.53 percent, MarketWatch reported. Technology shares led the 11 major S&P 500 sectors, while energy shares posted the steepest decline.
VIX course reflects a stronger stock market
Market breadth also improved. Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by 1.59 to 1 on the NYSE and by 1.76 to 1 on Nasdaq, according to Reuters.
Boeing's earnings miss made it the clearest single-stock drag. A separate closing-movers list showed Boeing down 10.8 percent and Valero Energy down 9.4 percent, while Navitas Semiconductor gained 11.1 percent, 24/7 Wall St. reported.
