Absa Bank Kenya is joining a United Nations-backed financing programme designed to expand solar-powered cold storage in Kenya. The United Nations Capital Development Fund said on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, that it had deployed a 1.09 million US dollar portfolio guarantee through the bank.

Guarantee targets agricultural lending

According to the United Nations Capital Development Fund, Absa Bank Kenya will provide direct loans of up to 2 million US dollars to aggregators, equipment suppliers, exporters and other large agricultural value-chain participants. The financing is intended to support solar-powered cold-storage installations for smallholder farmers and agribusinesses.

The wider programme is being implemented by UNCDF and the United Nations Development Programme with donor support from the Mitigation Action Facility. It covers horticulture, dairy, fisheries and livestock, with the broader initiative expected to improve cold-storage access for more than 60,000 farmers and support about 1,200 jobs.

Competition remains intense

The financing move comes as Kenya attracts both domestic and international banking groups seeking growth in East Africa. Business Daily identified Equity Group, Cooperative Bank and KCB Group among the entrenched domestic lenders competing with international banking groups. The article said local banks benefit from established customer bases, regional reach and mobile platforms.

Bank serves multiple segments

Absa Bank Kenya is a Kenya-based subsidiary of Absa Group. Its business units include retail banking, corporate banking, treasury and card services, with additional coverage for local businesses and small and medium-sized enterprises.

The bank operates through branches, ATMs and digital channels, and describes itself as one of Kenya's top banks. In the local market, it is an established international banking group competing with domestic leaders including Equity Group, Cooperative Bank and KCB Group, which Business Daily described as having stronger incumbent customer networks and regional reach.

For investors, the programme adds a climate-finance and agricultural-lending angle to Absa Bank Kenya's corporate banking activities. Its commercial significance will depend on loan demand, project execution and the ability to expand financing while managing credit risk in the agricultural value chain.
