Ambuja Cements stock faces cost pressure as Q2 margins narrow
Published on 11/01/2026 at 00:15 | Editorial responsibility: Rafael Müller, Editor-in-Chief AD HOC NEWSQ2 Results Keep Cost Pressure In Focus
- Ambuja Cements reported INR 9,197 crore of revenue and INR 1,271 crore of operating EBITDA for Q2 FY27.
- Fuel, logistics and geopolitical costs compressed profitability, while capacity expansion and a stronger premium mix remained central to the outlook.
- The proposed ACC and Orient Cement amalgamations are moving to the NCLT approval stage.
Ambuja Cements reported a sharp profit decline for the quarter ended September 30, 2026, as higher fuel, logistics and other operating costs offset steady revenue. The company said its Q2 FY27 performance reflected seasonal and external headwinds while trade and premium product sales improved revenue quality.
According to the company's results release, consolidated revenue from operations reached INR 9,197 crore. Operating EBITDA was INR 1,271 crore, with a margin of 13.8 percent, while profit after tax was INR 236 crore compared with INR 2,336 crore in the year-earlier quarter. The prior-year comparison included an income-tax provision reversal of INR 1,697 crore.
Costs Weigh On Operating Performance
Ambuja said elevated petcoke and coal prices, constrained coal availability, higher diesel costs and packaging expenses continued to pressure industry margins. Total cost stood at INR 4,410 per tonne in the quarter, while management is targeting a reduction to INR 4,250 per tonne by FY27.
Cement sales volume was 16.5 million tonnes, compared with 16.6 million tonnes a year earlier. Trade volumes increased 8.6 percent year on year, lifting trade's share to 74 percent, while premium products accounted for 37 percent of trade sales. The mix shift provides some support as the company works to protect profitability in a higher-cost environment.
Expansion Sets The Next Milestones
Ambuja commissioned 4.6 million tonnes per annum of new capacity during the quarter at Dahej, Salai Banwa and Kalamboli. A further 3.2 MTPA is being stabilised and ramped up, while 2.4 MTPA at Warisaliganj is expected to be commissioned in the second half of FY27.
Management expects volumes to grow ahead of the industry in the second half of the financial year, supported by higher trade volumes, calibrated institutional sales and new capacity. The company also expects the proposed amalgamations of ACC and Orient Cement to proceed to the National Company Law Tribunal after shareholder approval, subject to further regulatory and statutory clearances.
Ambuja Cements In The Market
Ambuja Cements manufactures and sells cement and related building materials in India. The company operates 24 integrated manufacturing plants and 24 grinding units with cement capacity of 113.5 MTPA, according to its release. It describes itself as the ninth-largest cement company globally, with its scale, distribution network, product mix and logistics efficiency shaping its position in India's competitive cement market.
Indian infrastructure spending, urbanisation, rural housing and industrial activity remain demand supports, while energy prices and freight costs are key near-term margin variables. The company's debt-free balance sheet and expansion program provide financial and operating flexibility, but the earnings trajectory will depend on cost reduction, pricing and the ramp-up of recently commissioned capacity.
