- Dr Reddy's quarterly profit exceeded analyst expectations despite a year-over-year decline.
- India revenue rose while North American sales fell as lenalidomide competition intensified.
- Semaglutide supply and new product approvals remain important near-term catalysts.
Dr Reddy's Laboratories reported a better-than-expected quarterly profit on October 23, although revenue and earnings declined from a year earlier. Reuters said domestic demand helped offset a slowdown in the company's key US market.
Quarterly profit beats expectations
Consolidated net profit after tax fell to 9.25 billion Indian rupees in the quarter ended September 30, from 13.47 billion rupees a year earlier. The result nevertheless exceeded the 7.49 billion rupee analyst estimate cited by Reuters.
Revenue from operations fell 1.6 percent to 86.98 billion rupees. North American revenue declined about 23 percent to 24.89 billion rupees as pricing pressure and competition weighed on generic medicines, including lenalidomide after the loss of exclusivity for Bristol Myers Squibb's Revlimid.
India and pipeline remain key
India revenue rose 17.2 percent to 18.5 billion rupees, supported by demand for chronic therapy medicines. The company also expanded its women's health portfolio through the acquisition of hormone replacement therapy brands.
Investors are watching the planned resumption of semaglutide supplies after an impurity issue in the active ingredient disrupted production and led to a recall-related charge in Canada. New launches and regulatory decisions could help offset pressure from mature US products, but execution and generic pricing remain material risks.
Business model and competitive position
Based in India, Dr. Reddy's develops and supplies generic medicines, active pharmaceutical ingredients and services, innovative medicines, and consumer health products across global markets, according to the company's business overview. Its portfolio combines affordable medicines with complex generics and biosimilar activities. Research from KoalaGains benchmarks the company against Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, Cipla, and Zydus Lifesciences. Compared with those larger or more domestically branded peers, Dr. Reddy's has greater exposure to North American generic cycles and remains more reliant on complex generic launches and API exports.
