Exxaro is modernising its Grootegeluk opencast coal mine in Limpopo through fleet renewal, digital operating systems and trials of lower-emission equipment. Mining Weekly reported on October 23, 2026 that the programme is intended to strengthen reliability and productivity rather than simply replace machines on a like-for-like basis.
Fleet renewal targets productivity
Exxaro is acquiring 17 new 220-tonne haul trucks for Grootegeluk, four of which had been commissioned during the first half of 2026, according to the report. The new equipment provides data on reliability, productivity and performance, supporting a shift from reactive maintenance towards predictive and prescriptive maintenance.
The mine is also assessing trolley assistance, newer diesel engines, hybrid technology, electric drilling and, over time, battery-electric haulage. Through the LANDCROS programme with Hitachi Construction Machinery, Grootegeluk is expected to host a hybrid haul-truck trial in 2027. The planned modification would add a battery and related control equipment to an existing truck.
Solar project adds operating context
Grootegeluk's 68-megawatt Lephalale solar project came online in April 2026 and was supplying about 30% of the mine's electricity requirements, Mining Weekly reported. That can reduce reliance on grid power while lowering Scope 2 emissions and energy costs, although the article does not quantify a financial benefit.
For investors, the developments point to a capital-intensive modernisation effort whose potential benefits depend on implementation, mine sequencing, infrastructure and equipment availability. Grootegeluk supplies the nearby Matimba and Medupi power stations and has more than four decades of operating life remaining, according to the report.
