Taekwang Industrial and Hankuk Carbon have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding for a possible acquisition of K Shipbuilding. The Herald Business reported the agreement on October 14, 2026.

The companies had formed a consortium and submitted a letter of intent on September 11. According to the report, Taekwang Industrial said it was reviewing the deal structure and terms as part of the renewed sale process, but that nothing had been finalized. The memorandum therefore marks a further step in the process rather than a completed acquisition.

A second attempt at the shipyard

Taekwang Industrial had previously been the sole participant in the final bidding round before the sellers declined to name its consortium the preferred bidder in June. It has now joined forces with Hankuk Carbon for a second attempt.

The proposed transaction covers 99.6 percent of K Shipbuilding. The stake consists of holdings controlled by Uamco through K Sunshine Holdings and by KHI. The sellers appointed Samil PwC as sale manager and relaunched the formal process in July 2025.

K Shipbuilding reported sales of KRW 1.26 trillion and operating profit of KRW 145.4 billion in the previous year, according to The Herald Business. In the first half of the current year, sales reached KRW 683.4 billion and operating profit was KRW 114.3 billion. These figures provide context for the asset being considered, but they do not establish the eventual value or financing terms of the proposed transaction.

What investors should monitor

For Hankuk Carbon, the key open questions are the final ownership structure, funding commitments and the conditions attached to any subsequent investment agreement. Until those details are disclosed, the MOU should be viewed as an ongoing strategic process rather than evidence of a completed change in ownership.
