- Hanwha Defense USA is expanding its Philadelphia shipyard into U.S. naval construction while retaining commercial shipbuilding.
- The order creates a new U.S. operating route for Hanwha's defense and maritime businesses.
- Execution, capacity expansion and workforce development will shape the commercial impact of the project.
Hanwha Defense USA has signed a USD 269 million contract with TOTE Services to build a medium landing ship for the U.S. Navy, Reuters reported on November 1, 2026. The vessel will be constructed at Hanwha's Philly Shipyard, marking the first order since Hanwha acquired the facility in December 2024. The Reuters report said the 2,687-ton vessel is intended for operations including the Indo-Pacific region.
A New U.S. Shipbuilding Route
The contract gives Hanwha a concrete entry point into U.S. naval construction. Hanwha's newsroom said the selection covers one ship, with options for three additional vessels, while construction is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2027. The option structure creates potential follow-on volume, but future ships would depend on further awards and execution at the Philadelphia yard.
The project also broadens the role of the shipyard beyond commercial vessels. Hanwha has described its U.S. strategy as a dual-use model combining commercial and defense work, which could improve the facility's strategic relevance while increasing the requirements for qualified labor, production capacity and program management.
Competitive Position In Shipbuilding
Hanwha Ocean remains part of South Korea's major shipbuilding group alongside HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and Samsung Heavy Industries. A November 3 report by iMarine, citing Banchero Costa data through September, placed Hanwha Ocean among the world's leading individual shipyards by order backlog, behind larger competitors including HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and Samsung Heavy Industries. That positioning gives Hanwha scale in commercial and defense shipbuilding, while the U.S. yard provides a more specialized North American foothold.
Hanwha's Business Mix
Hanwha is a South Korean industrial group active in energy and maritime solutions, aerospace and defense, finance, and technology and life solutions. Its businesses span solar, wind, hydrogen, shipbuilding, defense systems, financial services and advanced manufacturing, according to the Hanwha Group website. In shipbuilding, Hanwha competes with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and Samsung Heavy Industries, which have larger global order volumes, while Hanwha is building a differentiated position through defense vessels, specialized ships and its Philadelphia presence.
