IHI stock gets a hydrogen terminal compressor project
Published on 10/08/2026 at 00:28 | Editorial responsibility: Rafael Müller, Editor-in-Chief AD HOC NEWSIHI Corporation stock (ISIN JP3134800006) was last at JPY 2,691 on the Tokyo Stock Exchange on October 7, 2026, down 0.88 percent from the prior close. The same day, IHI announced that a wholly owned subsidiary's liquefied hydrogen boil-off gas compressor had been selected for the Kawasaki LH2 Terminal.
Hydrogen project adds an industrial angle
The compressor will handle boil-off gas from liquefied hydrogen storage tanks and help maintain pressure while hydrogen moves to customers through pipelines. IHI said the Kawasaki facility is being developed on Ogishima Island and is intended to become the world's first commercial-scale liquefied hydrogen receiving terminal.
The selection gives IHI a concrete link to Japan's emerging hydrogen infrastructure market, but the release does not disclose a contract value. The commercial importance therefore rests on equipment deployment and future reference value rather than an announced revenue contribution.
Quarterly profit includes a one-off gain
IHI's fiscal 2027 first-quarter revenue was JPY 374.5 billion, up from JPY 337.7 billion a year earlier, while operating profit increased to JPY 73.2 billion from JPY 20.8 billion, according to LIMO in its September 10, 2026 analysis. The same report said first-quarter net income was JPY 53.5 billion, compared with JPY 11.6 billion a year earlier.
The comparison needs a qualification. LIMO reported that IHI had recognized a gain of about JPY 40.0 billion from selling part of a Tokyo property during the quarter, making the profit increase less representative of recurring operations.
Stock remains below its yearly high
IHI's October 7 reference price stood within a daily range of JPY 2,657 to JPY 2,784, with volume of 12,548,900 shares. Its 52-week range was JPY 2,245 to JPY 4,698, placing the last quote JPY 2,007 below the yearly high.
The market capitalization was JPY 2.9 trillion as of October 7, 2026. For investors, the key contrast is clear: the hydrogen project broadens IHI's industrial narrative, while the quarterly profit comparison still requires adjustment for the property disposal gain.
