Internet Initiative stock was quoted at EUR 19.75 by Lang & Schwarz on October 29 at 11:00 p.m. Berlin time, unchanged from the previous quote. The company is also facing investor attention after an operational error at a customer of its systems business.
According to ASCII.jp English Edition, SBI Securities said on October 14 that 779 accounts were subject to unnecessary forced liquidations after collateral valuations were not reflected in its foreign-exchange stock collateral service. The incident occurred during processing that began on October 12 and was restored at 5:30 a.m. on October 13.
Operational controls under scrutiny
ASCII.jp attributed the incident to an operational error by Internet Initiative Japan, which had been subcontracted for system operations. A delayed file was misunderstood, and subsequent processing proceeded without importing collateral information and stock closing-price files. The system was also designed to continue without confirming that all required files were available.
SBI Securities said its policy was to restore affected positions to the state they would have been in without the error. The broker reported that 407 accounts with no subsequent transactions or deposits or withdrawals were restored on October 13. It said the remaining 372 accounts, as well as customers who voluntarily settled positions, would be handled individually. SBI Securities also said there had been no unauthorized external access or leakage of personal or asset information.
What investors can monitor
The episode highlights operational resilience and subcontractor oversight as relevant considerations for Internet Initiative's enterprise technology and network-services business. The available report describes a service-processing failure rather than an external security breach, while the customer remediation process remains an important part of the incident's outcome.
