- KOGAS plans to reuse LNG regasification cold energy for industrial cooling in South Korea.
- The company is also pursuing data-center and logistics applications with local partners.
- The initiative broadens KOGAS' role beyond gas supply into energy infrastructure and emissions reduction.
Korea Gas Corporation is expanding the use of LNG cold energy after securing approval for a project designed to supply cooling to a refrigerated logistics warehouse near its Pyeongtaek production base. CHOSUNBIZ reported the development on Monday, October 26, citing the company's project registration after approval from South Korea's Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment in September.
From Regasification To Industrial Cooling
The project uses the very low temperature generated when imported liquefied natural gas is vaporized for city-gas supply. KOGAS said the initiative is expected to cut about 28,000 tons of greenhouse-gas emissions over 15 years by replacing electricity used for cooling.
Much of this cold energy had previously been discharged into the sea. KOGAS is now developing applications across logistics, data centers and other industrial facilities, seeking to turn a byproduct of LNG regasification into a commercial energy service.
Potential Beyond The First Project
KOGAS is working with the Incheon Port Authority and Korea Ultra Low Temperature Incheon on a planned data-center and logistics complex near New Incheon Port. The company estimates that cold-energy use for data-center cooling could reduce annual gas and electricity costs by 5.84 billion won and cut emissions by 7,600 tons a year.
The broader opportunity depends on the projects that are ultimately built and on customers adopting the cooling service. KOGAS plans to use cold energy from its LNG production bases in Incheon, Pyeongtaek, Tongyeong and Samcheok, giving the initiative a national operating footprint.
KOGAS Business Profile
KOGAS imports liquefied natural gas, vaporizes it at domestic production bases and supplies it for city-gas and power-generation needs in South Korea. Its operating base includes four LNG production sites, while its newer initiatives target data infrastructure, industrial cooling and carbon-reduction services. The cold-energy program therefore extends the company's role from gas logistics into energy-related infrastructure and efficiency projects.
