LG Uplus stock draws AI focus after NeurIPS research recognition

LG Uplus said on Thursday, October 29, that two papers on AI token optimization had been accepted for the On-Device Intelligence Workshop at NeurIPS 2026. The research recognition gives the South Korean telecom operator another technology angle as it develops AI services.
According to The Chosun Ilbo, LG Uplus developed a small language model for voice-call services and applied model-lightweighting and inference-acceleration techniques for smartphone use. Tests showed processing speeds about 4.5 times higher than conventional methods, while battery consumption fell about 77%.
From research to commercial services
The work also examined training AI directly on smartphones without sending personal data to external servers. Device tests produced accuracy comparable with server-based training, and LG Uplus is considering how to apply the technology to its AI services.
The company said the optimization work validated on smartphones will also be expanded to server graphics-processing-unit environments. That step could broaden the technology beyond handset applications, although the company has not announced a commercial launch timetable in the report.
