- Third-quarter operating profit rose sharply as last year's one-off labor costs created a favorable comparison.
- Artificial intelligence data centers led growth in the corporate infrastructure business.
- LG Uplus plans phased commercial operations for a 200-megawatt facility in Paju through 2028.
LG Uplus reported a sharp improvement in third-quarter profitability on November 4, while revenue declined. The South Korean carrier's operating profit rose 84.1 percent year over year to 297.6 billion won for the July-to-September period, according to Yonhap News Agency.
Net income increased 272.8 percent to 183.1 billion won, while sales fell 0.7 percent to 3.98 trillion won. The earnings comparison benefited from one-off labor costs recorded in the year-earlier quarter, and the company also cited efforts to streamline its business operations.
AI infrastructure leads enterprise growth
Corporate infrastructure revenue increased 10.4 percent year over year, led by the artificial intelligence data-center business, whose revenue rose 27.7 percent. LG Uplus is building a 200-megawatt AI data center in Paju, north of Seoul, with commercial operations scheduled to begin in phases through 2028.
Investment is rising alongside the expansion. Capital expenditure for the quarter increased 30.1 percent year over year to 569.8 billion won as LG Uplus expanded spending on AI data centers. That strategy offers a growth avenue beyond the company's mature mobile business, but it also raises the importance of customer demand and project execution.
Core telecom trends remain mixed
Mobile-service revenue fell 0.9 percent year over year, while the smart-home division, which includes internet and IPTV services, grew 2.9 percent. The contrasting performance leaves AI infrastructure and enterprise services as important contributors to the company's near-term growth profile.
Business model and competitive position
LG Uplus provides mobile communications, internet, IPTV and smart-home services in South Korea, and is expanding into enterprise infrastructure and AI data centers. Its consumer business competes with larger national telecom operators such as SK Telecom and KT, while its enterprise offering is becoming more specialized around connectivity, cloud-related services and AI infrastructure. The company is headquartered in Seoul, according to its official website.
