- The East Terminal is the first phase of a major Moroccan port and industrial complex.
- Marsa Maroc and Terminal Investment Limited will operate and maintain the terminal for 25 years.
- Further terminals and energy infrastructure are planned as the project expands through 2030.
Marsa Maroc is entering a new operating phase at Nador West Med after Morocco began operations at the port complex's East Terminal on November 4, 2026. Food Business Middle East & Africa reported that a consortium of Marsa Maroc and Terminal Investment Limited, a subsidiary of MSC Group, holds a 25-year operations and maintenance agreement.
A new port platform takes shape
The East Terminal represents the first operational stage of a wider port and industrial complex backed by 54 billion dirhams in public and private investment. The terminal includes 1,520 metres of quay, an 18-metre draft and 70 hectares of container yards.
Annual capacity is expected to reach 3.5 million twenty-foot equivalent units by 2030. The project is also scheduled to add a second container terminal, a general cargo terminal, a bulk cargo terminal and roll-on/roll-off facilities, while energy infrastructure includes planned LNG and petroleum products terminals.
Execution will shape the opportunity
For Marsa Maroc, the project expands its role beyond its existing Moroccan port network and creates exposure to future container and industrial traffic. The commercial ramp-up will depend on attracting shipping operators, building efficient inland connections and generating activity around the complex.
The competitive environment includes Morocco's Tanger Med, as well as Algeria's Djendjen and Spain's Valencia and Algeciras. Food Business Middle East & Africa reported that Tanger Med handled 11.1 million TEUs in 2025, highlighting the scale of established Mediterranean alternatives.
What Marsa Maroc operates
Marsa Maroc operates ports and terminals in Morocco, providing services to ships and cargo. Its website lists pilotage, towing, mooring and cargo-handling services across a network of 24 terminals, with activities spanning containers, bulk goods, vehicles, hydrocarbons and agricultural products. In the regional port landscape, Marsa Maroc is a Moroccan operator expanding through Nador West Med, while Tanger Med is a larger established transshipment hub and Valencia and Algeciras are major Spanish competitors.
