- Mirae Asset Securities agreed to acquire all shares of Japan's Sanko Securities to secure a local securities license.
- Investors are also awaiting a treasury-share cancellation plan and a three-year shareholder-return policy alongside third-quarter earnings.
Mirae Asset Securities agreed on October 29, 2026, to acquire all shares of Japan's Sanko Securities for KRW 47.6 billion, according to a report by Edaily. The Korean brokerage is pursuing the transaction through its US intermediate holding company, US Holdings.
License opens Japanese retail route
The deal is designed to secure Sanko's Japanese securities license, which would allow Mirae Asset Securities to conduct securities business in the country without building a new licensing platform from scratch. The company plans to prepare a mobile trading system and begin developing a retail operation for Japanese customers.
Edaily cited NH Investment & Securities analyst Yoon Yu-dong, who described the acquisition as a practical way to accelerate market entry because obtaining a new Japanese license is difficult. Of the KRW 100.6 billion total investment, about KRW 53 billion is intended for preparations including mobile trading infrastructure.
Returns remain a near-term focus
Mirae Asset Securities plans to announce a shareholder-return policy after a board resolution scheduled for November 12, alongside its third-quarter earnings release. The plan is expected to include the cancellation of 108 million treasury shares and a three-year shareholder-return framework covering 2027 through 2029.
The analyst also expects overseas acquisitions and partnerships to remain part of the group's expansion strategy. Profitability at Sanko is likely to develop gradually as the Japanese business establishes its operations and builds a customer base.
What investors should watch
The Japanese transaction adds a new regional growth initiative, but execution will depend on licensing, technology deployment and customer acquisition. Investors will have a nearer-term reference point in the November 12 earnings and board announcements.
