MISC Berhad has secured long-term charter awards for five new liquefied natural gas carriers from PETRONAS LNG, strengthening the visibility of its LNG shipping programme. The Edge Malaysia reported on October 8 that each vessel will operate under a firm 20-year charter, with operations expected to begin in 2030.
Long-term demand supports newbuilds
MISC will provide the shipping services through wholly owned subsidiaries and plans to enter shipbuilding contracts with Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding in China. The contract value was not disclosed. The company said the project is designed to support PETRONAS' expected LNG production growth and renew its carrier fleet with more efficient vessels.
The award connects future fleet investment with identified customer demand several years before delivery. The Edge Malaysia reported that MISC's fleet included 32 LNG carriers, 72 petroleum vessels, 12 floating storage and production assets, and six ethane carriers.
