Old Republic International reported mixed third-quarter results on October 22, 2026, with higher insurance revenue but lower operating profitability. The figures were published by Old Republic Title on behalf of the parent company, Old Republic International Corporation.
Revenue growth, weaker operating income
Net operating income fell to USD 181.4 million from USD 196.7 million a year earlier. Operating income per diluted share declined to USD 0.73 from USD 0.78. Management defines this non-GAAP measure as net income excluding net investment gains or losses and the bargain purchase gain, making it a more focused measure of insurance operations but not a replacement for GAAP net income.
Net income was USD 243.2 million, compared with USD 279.5 million in the prior-year quarter. At the same time, consolidated net premiums and fees earned increased to nearly USD 2.3 billion from nearly USD 2.1 billion. Net investment income rose to USD 185.4 million from USD 182.6 million.
Underwriting remains the key watchpoint
The consolidated combined ratio was 96.1%, compared with 95.3% in the third quarter of 2025. Favorable loss reserve development contributed 1.1 percentage points, less than the 2.5-point benefit recorded a year earlier. For investors, the combination of premium growth and a slightly weaker underwriting ratio points to the importance of claims trends and expense discipline in future quarters.
Old Republic also reported an annualized operating return on equity of 12.1%. Book value per share was USD 24.65, including dividends declared, representing a 5.7% increase from year-end 2025. Capital returned during the quarter totaled USD 190.2 million, including USD 113.8 million in share repurchases.
