- Mild weather reduced customer demand during Portland General Electric's third quarter.
- Industrial demand supported the utility as high-tech and data-center activity continued to expand.
- Management maintained its long-term growth outlook despite the revised near-term guidance.
Portland General Electric reported its third-quarter 2026 results on October 29, with unusually mild weather weighing on electricity demand and prompting a reduction in its full-year adjusted earnings outlook. The company said in its third-quarter results release that adjusted earnings per share were USD 1.06, while GAAP earnings per share were USD 1.00.
Mild weather pressures quarterly demand
Portland General Electric recorded GAAP net income of USD 119 million, compared with USD 103 million in the year-earlier quarter. Adjusted net income reached USD 125 million, versus USD 110 million a year earlier, while total revenue increased to USD 971 million from USD 952 million.
The company attributed the pressure on adjusted earnings to the mildest third quarter in a decade. Management said unfavorable weather created a USD 0.15 year-over-year headwind to quarterly earnings per share. Residential deliveries fell 8.9% on a reported basis, while commercial deliveries declined 4.8%.
Industrial demand remains a support
Industrial demand provided a counterweight. Industrial energy deliveries increased 6.0% on a reported basis and 6.4% after weather adjustment, with the company citing continued growth from high-tech and data-center customers. Portland General Electric also said its participation in the Extended Day-Ahead Market, launched on October 1, is expected to support estimated customer savings of USD 14 million in 2027.
Lower near-term earnings guidance
Portland General Electric revised its 2026 adjusted earnings guidance to USD 3.18 to USD 3.28 per diluted share from the previous range of USD 3.33 to USD 3.53. The updated outlook assumes weather-adjusted energy-delivery growth of 1.0% to 2.0% and normal temperatures during November and December.
The revision is an important near-term consideration for investors because the weather effect affected demand even as industrial load growth remained positive. The company said its long-term outlook remains intact, leaving the balance between data-center demand, capital investment and weather sensitivity central to the investment case.
