- CGS International sees additional upside from Sime Darby's role in BYD local vehicle assembly.
- The arrangement could lift production scale at Sime Darby's 54%-owned Inokom subsidiary.

Sime Darby could gain additional upside from BYD's decision to use its Inokom subsidiary for local electric-vehicle assembly, according to an analysis by The Edge Malaysia published on Sunday, November 1, 2026. The underlying announcement and analyst note were dated October 16.
Local assembly expands flexibility
BYD appointed Inokom Corporation as its local assembly partner for completely knocked-down vehicles at the Kulim plant. CGS International said the arrangement could free Sime Darby from a 10,000-unit domestic sales cap attached to the previous assembly plan and improve economies of scale as production volumes rise.
Inokom can produce up to 80,000 vehicles a year at an 80% utilisation rate, according to the report. The earlier plan for a facility in Tanjung Malim envisaged capacity of up to 50,000 units, with domestic sales capped at 10,000 vehicles and the balance intended for export.
Tax treatment supports the case
Locally assembled electric vehicles benefit from a tax exemption through 2027. CGS International said the incentive could potentially be extended as Malaysia promotes local assembly. Details on BYD's production volumes have not yet been announced, leaving the eventual earnings contribution uncertain.
Sime Darby has distributed BYD vehicles in Malaysia since 2022. The local assembly arrangement is therefore relevant both to its manufacturing exposure and to the competitiveness of its Malaysian distribution business.
The company's next results are scheduled for November 26, 2026, keeping operating execution and any further assembly details in focus for investors.
Sime Darby operates heavy-equipment, automotive and industrial businesses across Asia Pacific. Its Sime Motors division covers vehicle importation, assembly, distribution, retail and rental, while Sime Industrial focuses on heavy equipment and related services. Inokom is controlled by Sime Darby through a 54% stake and also has Hyundai Motor Company and Bermaz Auto as industry participants and co-owners, giving Sime Darby a controlling position in this local assembly platform.
