Tata Consumer stock is drawing attention after a strong September quarter led by India and newer growth categories. Tea demand stayed subdued.

Growth broadens beyond core brands

  • India branded products delivered strong underlying volume growth, led by salt.
  • Newer categories such as Tata Sampann and ready-to-drink beverages expanded rapidly.
  • International operations grew in reported terms but faced a high comparison base and currency pressure.
  • Tata Starbucks continued to post strong same-store sales momentum.

Tata Consumer Products reported a stronger second quarter on October 26, with revenue from operations rising 14% year on year to Rs 5,661 crore. The company's official results release said consolidated EBITDA increased 18% to Rs 794 crore, while group net profit rose 16% to Rs 470 crore.

Tata Consumer Products attributed the performance to its India business and faster-growing categories. Underlying volume growth in the India branded business reached 11%, while salt revenue increased 15% and Tata Sampann revenue grew 57%.

Newer categories lift momentum

Ready-to-drink products delivered 47% revenue growth, supported by wider distribution, premiumization and product launches. Capital Foods and Organic India grew 15% together, although export shipping disruption affected the combined performance; domestic revenue for the businesses increased 24%.

India tea volumes were flat and revenue declined marginally as the company adjusted pricing. The international business grew 7% in reported terms but declined 2% in constant currency against a high base, highlighting the importance of domestic growth to the near-term investment case.

Tata Consumer also launched 22 products during the quarter across health and wellness, convenience and premium categories. Tata Starbucks revenue rose 15%, and the joint venture ended the period with 505 stores in 81 Indian cities.

Business model and competition

Tata Consumer Products combines beverages, food staples and out-of-home retail. Its portfolio includes tea, coffee, water, ready-to-drink beverages, salt, pulses, spices, ready-to-cook and ready-to-eat foods, cereals and snacks, with operations in India and international markets.

A KoalaGains competitive analysis places the company alongside Nestle India, Hindustan Unilever and ITC as major packaged-food and FMCG benchmarks. Tata Consumer is more focused on food and beverages, while those peers provide broader scale or stronger positions in selected convenience-food and staple categories.
