Results Point To Mixed Drivers

Trinity Industries reported stronger revenue but lower profitability for the third quarter ended September 30, 2026. The company said in its Company Announcement carried by the Financial Times on October 29 that revenue increased 18 percent year over year to 535.1 million US dollars.

Income from continuing operations was 21.6 million US dollars, compared with 31.4 million US dollars a year earlier. Diluted earnings per share from continuing operations fell to 0.27 US dollars from 0.38 US dollars, while operating profit declined to 95.6 million US dollars from 118.6 million US dollars. Trinity attributed the pressure to lower gains on lease portfolio sales and higher selling, engineering and administrative expenses, partly offset by a gain on the sale of a manufacturing facility.

Railcar Orders Improve Sequentially

The Rail Products Group delivered 2,030 new railcars and received orders for 2,190 during the quarter. Its backlog stood at 1.6467 billion US dollars at September 30. Revenue in the segment increased to 339.5 million US dollars from 278.8 million US dollars in the prior-year quarter, while operating profit rose to 30.7 million US dollars from 19.9 million US dollars.

The Railcar Leasing and Services Group reported fleet utilization of 97.0 percent. Renewal success reached 89 percent, and renewal rates were 4.1 percent above expiring rates, according to the company. The group nevertheless recorded lower revenue and operating profit as lease portfolio gains fell and the consolidated fleet changed after leasing-partnership transactions.

Guidance Remains In Place

Trinity maintained its 2026 guidance for earnings per share of 2.20 to 2.40 US dollars, excluding items outside core business operations. It expects industry deliveries below 25,000 railcars and net fleet investment of 300 million to 350 million US dollars. Management also raised its expectation for full-year secondary-market gains on railcar sales while retaining the earnings range.
