- U-Ming is adding dry-bulk capacity while pursuing a fleet of more than 100 vessels.
- The company is broadening its portfolio beyond dry bulk into tankers, offshore wind vessels and LNG tonnage.
- The newbuildings are scheduled for delivery between late 2029 and 2030.
U-Ming Marine Transport is expanding its fleet with six additional bulk carriers ordered at Chinese shipyards, according to IndexBox. The report published on October 5, 2026 said the commitments range from 296 million to 312 million US dollars.
New ships support fleet growth
The order comprises two 211,000-deadweight-ton Newcastlemax vessels and four 64,000-deadweight-ton Ultramax vessels. The Newcastlemax ships are being built by Jiangsu Hantong Ship Heavy Industry, while New Dayang Shipbuilding will construct the Ultramax vessels.
The first Ultramax is scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2029, with the remaining three expected in 2030. The Newcastlemax vessels are also planned for delivery across 2029 and 2030. The commitments convert options from an earlier program into confirmed ships and extend U-Ming's expansion plan.
Dry bulk remains central
U-Ming is targeting a fleet of more than 100 vessels. The company said at the end of September that its owned, joint venture and newbuilding fleet had reached roughly 90 ships and exceeded 10 million deadweight tons, according to the IndexBox report.
The investment increases exposure to future dry-bulk demand while committing capital well before the ships enter service. Freight rates, construction costs and delivery schedules will remain important factors for the eventual return on the vessels.
Business spans several shipping segments
U-Ming Marine Transport is a Taiwan-based shipowner focused on dry bulk, with additional exposure to very large crude carriers, very large ore carriers, offshore wind vessels and LNG tonnage. Its strategy combines fleet renewal with expansion into adjacent maritime segments.
In the broader shipping landscape cited by IndexBox, larger Chinese operators such as COSCO Shipping Energy Transportation and China Merchants Energy Shipping operate at greater scale, while U-Ming occupies a more diversified specialist position and is seeking to grow beyond its current fleet size. Ningbo Ocean Shipping is another named regional shipping operator in that landscape.
