Vir Biotechnology announced on October 14, 2026, that it had entered a collaboration and license agreement with Gilead Sciences to discover and engineer three dual-masked T-cell engager candidates for selected solid tumor-associated antigens. The announcement was published by Vir Biotechnology.
Deal adds three solid tumor programs
Vir will handle discovery, design and optimization under the agreement, using its dAIsY data and artificial-intelligence platform together with its PRO-XTEN masking technology. Gilead will hold an exclusive license to nominate and advance candidates generated through the collaboration and will assume subsequent development, manufacturing and commercialization activities.
Vir is eligible for up to 135 million US dollars in upfront and near-term preclinical milestone payments. That amount includes 65 million US dollars in cash, a 25 million US dollar equity investment priced at a 30 percent premium, and up to 45 million US dollars in potential near-term preclinical milestones. The company may also receive up to 1.74 billion US dollars in development, regulatory and commercial milestones, plus tiered royalties on net sales.
Technology targets tumor selectivity
Vir said PRO-XTEN is designed to keep T-cell engagers inactive until they reach the tumor microenvironment, where tumor-specific proteases can remove the mask. The company says the approach could help limit toxicity, widen the therapeutic index and support less frequent dosing, but these remain development-stage expectations.
