26 Drownings and a Weekend of Water Rescues: Germany’s Emergency Services Tested in June Heat

Germany’s leading water rescue organisation, the DLRG, warned on Saturday that 26 people had drowned across the country over the first hot weekend of June. The figure emerged during an awareness event in the Uckermark region, where experts stressed the need for constant vigilance – both for private swimmers and commercial operators.
The warning came as rescue teams dealt with a series of incidents on lakes and coastal waters, from evacuations and drills to a life-threatening medical emergency.
On Friday afternoon around 1:30 p.m., smoke was detected in the engine room of a tour boat on Lake Chiemsee in Bavaria. Crew reported a defect in an electrical generator that had caused hot oil to escape. The alarm triggered an immediate rescue operation. All 200 passengers were evacuated without incident and transferred to a replacement vessel. No injuries or environmental damage were reported.
Meanwhile, a planned safety drill took place on Saturday at the Hohenwarte Reservoir in eastern Germany. Emergency crews simulated a complete engine failure on a passenger ship, testing coordination and evacuation procedures. The exercise was completed successfully.
Days earlier, on Wednesday, a more complex scenario unfolded off the coast of Binz on the island of Rügen. Firefighters, DLRG teams, and specialised offshore helicopters rehearsed a collision between two boats with passengers thrown overboard. Such manoeuvres help refine the rescue chain between water-based teams and airborne units – a critical factor during the busy summer season.
Not every call-out involved a training simulation. On Friday midday, a 75-year-old passenger collapsed aboard the museum lightship “Fehmarnbelt” in the Bay of Lübeck. The German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DGzRS) launched an immediate response. The patient was stabilised and taken to hospital.
