Adidas is heading into its World Cup final showcase with a noticeably larger stake in its own equity. A voting-rights notification dated 14 July 2026 and published on 16 July shows the company holding 3.04 percent of its voting rights in treasury shares, up from 0.81 percent previously. That is equal to 5,327,959 shares held directly and a further 138,812 held indirectly, out of 180,000,000 total voting rights.

The scale of the change points to an active repurchase programme rather than a one-off adjustment. For investors, a larger treasury stock position usually signals that management is returning capital and gradually shrinking the free float. It also reduces dilution and can support earnings per share over time.

The market response was muted. Adidas shares finished Thursday at EUR181.75, leaving them down 0.22 percent for the week, though still up 7.90 percent since the start of the year. That resilience comes even as the stock trades 11.99 percent below its 52-week high of EUR206.50, reached on 17 July 2025, and well above the 52-week low of EUR130.20 from March 2026.

The timing of the disclosure overlaps with one of the company’s biggest commercial stages of the year. Adidas says it will outfit both sides in the World Cup final between Argentina and Spain, scheduled for 19 July 2026 at MetLife Stadium in New York. Yet that high-profile exposure has not produced much of a share-price reaction so far, suggesting the sports backdrop is already largely reflected in trading.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Adidas?

Outside football, Adidas is also widening its outdoor offering. The TERREX Freehiker 3 line has been expanded with four new models: Ultra GTX, Mid GTX, Low GTX and SL. According to the company, the range combines Hyperboost or Dreamstrike+ cushioning with a GORE-TEX membrane and a Continental outsole. Prices run from US$150 to US$220.

The broader investment case remains split between operational momentum and execution risk. In the first quarter of 2026, Adidas posted währungsbereinigt revenue growth of 14 percent to EUR6.59 billion, and earnings per share of EUR2.72 beat expectations. On the other hand, US tariffs could weigh on results by as much as EUR400 million, inventories have risen 14 percent, and the company is set to lose the DFB kit contract from 2027.

Running remains the strategic battleground. Adidas wants to keep taking share from Nike with performance models such as the Adizero Adios Pro Evo 3, after its market share in shoes rose to 19.2 percent in June from 16 percent a year earlier. That matters for the outlook: the company’s 2026 EBIT guidance stands at EUR2.3 billion, and a stronger position in the higher-margin running segment would help defend it.

Adidas at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

There is also some support from the technical picture. The stock is 7.84 percent above its 50-day average of EUR168.11, while the RSI of 57.4 points to a neutral-to-slightly constructive setup. The next company update later in July will be the real test. If margins improve and the running business keeps delivering, the stock could move toward EUR190. If not, the 200-day average at EUR158.31 may come back into view.
