Germany’s industrial safety landscape is undergoing a rapid transformation. In June, the Association of German Engineers (VDI) published updated guidelines for fire and explosion protection in conveyor systems, while a catastrophic barn blaze in Saxony-Anhalt has pushed lawmakers toward stricter oversight of agricultural facilities.

The revised standard, VDI 2263 Blatt 8, raises the bar for bucket elevators, angle and pendulum bucket conveyors, and corrugated-sidewall belt conveyors that handle combustible dust-air mixtures. Manufacturers and operators must now comply with more rigorous protective measures for dust-carrying equipment. The document, available through DIN Media, is intended to serve as the technical foundation for safety assessments of these systems.

The urgency behind the update was underscored on July 15, when a fire ripped through a pig-fattening operation in Coswig. Around 20,000 animals perished, and property damage reached roughly €9 million. Saxony-Anhalt’s agriculture ministry acknowledged a pressing need to improve safety precautions in livestock housing. Electrical faults are a frequent ignition source in such incidents—investigators are still working to determine the cause in Coswig. Environmental groups BUND and Peta have already called for broader industry consequences, and the ministry is now evaluating tighter requirements.

Industry players are meanwhile turning to prevention technology. The waste-management firm Saubermacher has installed four thermal-imaging systems in Austria that scan up to 92,000 square meters for temperature spikes before a fire can develop. The company now operates 44 such detection units in total.

Materials science is also advancing. Graphene, used as an active enhancer in halogen-free plastics, can cut flame time in thin-walled components by as much as 80 percent. Clariant is investing roughly 100 million Swiss francs in new flame-retardant production capacity.

The goal is to embed safety considerations across the entire lifecycle of such systems while aligning with the European Union’s AI Act.
