Managers who think they can simply delegate electrical safety tasks and walk away may want to think again. A new guidance document from the TÜV Rheinland Akademie sharpens the focus on what it calls "operator responsibility" — a legal obligation that sits squarely with company leadership, not just the technicians on the ground.

The academy's publication lays out a clear chain of accountability. Executives must personally ensure that staff are carefully selected, properly instructed, and continuously supervised when working with electrical installations. A central pillar of this framework is the appointment of a "responsible electrical specialist" (VEFK), a designated person who oversees technical compliance and enforces electrical engineering standards. Without that appointment, the management itself remains directly liable.

To help companies navigate these legal requirements, TÜV Rheinland now offers a suite of training programs. These cover operator responsibility, the role of the VEFK, and risk assessment procedures — the so-called "Gefährdungsbeurteilung." The courses aim to equip decision-makers with the skills needed to minimize liability exposure while keeping operations safe. Conducting proper risk assessments is described as the foundational tool for spotting electrical hazards early and implementing appropriate countermeasures.

Speaking of risk assessments — keeping a compliant, up-to-date record of workplace hazards is a legal duty that many managers find time-consuming. A free toolkit provides 41 ready-to-use templates and checklists, including for fire safety and manual handling, so you can document risks efficiently and stay on the right side of the law. But the training offerings don't stop at traditional safety protocols. As digitalization accelerates, TÜV Rheinland has added a seminar on artificial intelligence in electrical engineering. The course runs for eight teaching units (UE) and costs €845 net. It targets professionals working with algorithms and automated systems in power grids or industrial plants. While AI opens up new possibilities for monitoring and maintenance, it also introduces fresh challenges around safety and workforce qualifications. The seminar aims to build the knowledge base needed to harness these technologies without compromising existing safety standards.

Beyond classroom learning, TÜV Rheinland also provides on-site audits of a company's electrical organization. A certified expert visits the premises to examine internal workflows and responsibilities in detail. The review checks whether task delegation meets legal requirements and whether communication channels within the organization function properly. For managers, this external assessment offers an objective basis for improving site safety and documenting compliance with regulations. A well-structured electrical organization, the academy stresses, is essential for preventing accidents and, in the event of an incident, proving that all due diligence obligations were fulfilled.
