Allianz Sits Just 0.64% From a Record, Yet a Slowing Buyback and a Flashing Indicator Give Pause

Allianz shares trade just 0.64% below their 52-week high, but a slowing buyback and an RSI of 77.6 suggest the rally may be losing steam. Macro tailwinds from rate cut hopes offer support.

The Allianz share closed at €418.70 on Friday, a mere 0.64% below its 52-week high of €421.40 set the same day. On the surface, the picture looks bullish: the stock has surged 2.80% in the past week, 13.28% over the last month, and 21.64% over twelve months. But beneath the rally, two counterweights have emerged. The insurer’s own buyback programme has lost momentum, and a widely watched technical gauge is flashing an overbought warning.

The 14-day relative strength index stands at 77.6, well above the threshold of 70 that many chartists interpret as a sign that the stock may be stretched. Even so, the share price remains comfortably above its key moving averages — 11.66% above the 200-day line at €374.98 and 7.70% above the 50-day average — suggesting the uptrend retains structural support. From its 52-week low of €334.90 set in August 2025, the stock has now advanced 25.02%.

The latest leg of the rally traces back to surprisingly weak US labour market data. The June jobs report showed only 57,000 new positions were added, while the unemployment rate ticked up to 4.2%. That soft reading boosted expectations that the Federal Reserve may pause or begin cutting rates in September, with the implied probability jumping from 35.8% to 46.8%. Lower rates are particularly favourable for capital-intensive insurers such as Allianz, because they bring greater predictability to investment returns. The broader market has also responded: the Stoxx 600 hit a new all-time high of 651.77 points.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Allianz?

Yet while the macroeconomic tailwind has strengthened, Allianz’s own share repurchase activity has tapered. The current buyback programme, announced on February 25 and launched on March 13, authorises up to €2.5 billion in purchases by the end of December 2026. In the week from June 22 to June 26, however, the company bought back just 269,707 of its own shares — a notably slower cadence than earlier tranches. Since the start of the programme, the total stands at 3,656,268 shares. The pattern is common: when the share price rises, the cost effectiveness of buybacks declines, and companies often pull back.

Looking ahead, the week of July 6 (calendar week 28) brings several events with potential indirect impact. The European Central Bank and the Federal Reserve will release minutes of their latest meetings, offering clues on the rate path. Germany is due to report factory orders and industrial production for May, alongside the Sentix investor sentiment index for July. In the US, quarterly earnings from JPMorgan, Bank of America and Netflix will kick off the reporting season and could set the tone for the financial sector. The DAX currently sits at 25,804.25 points, eyeing the 26,000 mark; a breakout there would likely provide additional momentum for Allianz.

The next major company-specific catalyst is the second-quarter earnings release scheduled for August 7. Until then, the combination of a near-record share price, a slowing buyback and an elevated RSI creates an unusual tension — one that leaves investors weighing whether the rally has room to run or a brief breather is overdue.
