Amazon is doubling down on a capital-intensive bet that carries a steep short-term price. The company’s cloud backlog has swelled to $364 billion, but the spending needed to fulfill those orders is creating a hefty hole in its cash flow. Analysts now expect a negative free cash flow of $10 billion for the current year, a stark reversal from the $131 billion in capital expenditure recorded last year.

The e-commerce and cloud giant plans to deploy around $200 billion in investments by 2026, with the bulk flowing into hardware and data centers for generative artificial intelligence. To bridge the funding gap, Amazon has taken on more than $80 billion in debt over the past twelve months. Finance chief Brian Olsavsky has described the outlays as non-negotiable, arguing the company must scale infrastructure to meet surging demand.

AWS continues to dominate the cloud market with a roughly 30% share of a sector industry watchers estimate will exceed $1 trillion by year-end. The order book stretching to March underscores how deeply enterprise customers are locking into Amazon’s ecosystem. At the same time, the division is pushing into highly sensitive verticals. A new "Secret Cloud for Industry" has been launched for defense contractors; Northrop Grumman is already using the isolated environment for classified projects. Amazon is also deploying $1 billion toward a framework to modernize U.S. government agencies, and another $1 billion for "Forward Deployed Engineering," a program that embeds AWS engineers directly with clients to build custom AI solutions.

On the product side, the return of Anthropic’s "Claude Fable 5" model to the Bedrock platform marks another step in Amazon’s AI offensive. The model accelerates complex coding and large-scale data analysis, and it is aimed squarely at high-security customers in government and defense.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Amazon?

While cloud and AI dominate the long-term narrative, Amazon’s retail engine continues to churn out records. Prime Day, which ran for four days in late June, generated $26.4 billion in U.S. sales, up 9.3% from last year. The online advertising business also benefited from the AI boom, posting $17.2 billion in revenue in the first quarter, a 22% year-over-year gain. Yet rising logistics costs and intense competition are squeezing margins in the core e-commerce business.

Meanwhile, the company’s satellite venture, Project "Leo," now has nearly 400 units in orbit, with ambitions to beam broadband internet globally. Satellite internet remains a small but strategically important piece of the broader infrastructure puzzle.

At the close of trading Friday, Amazon shares stood at €212.50, just below the 50-day moving average, but up about 10% since the start of the year. The stock rose 4.22% on the week, reflecting cautious optimism among investors who are weighing near-term pain against long-term potential. The majority of Wall Street analysts still rate the stock a "Strong Buy."

Amazon at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Amazon reports second-quarter earnings at the end of July. In the first quarter, earnings per share of $2.78 easily beat expectations, while revenue climbed to more than $181 billion. Repeating that performance will be crucial if management hopes to keep the market on board with its aggressive spending strategy.
