Applied Digital's AI Pivot: 1.2GW Capacity, But Stock Remains Depressed

Applied Digital has crossed the 1.2-gigawatt threshold for contracted computing capacity across four data-center campuses, a major leap in its transformation from a crypto-mining operator into an artificial-intelligence infrastructure provider. Yet the stock's trajectory tells a more cautious story: after a 10.21% bounce on Monday to €24.40, the shares still sit 38.32% lower than a month ago and remain nearly 44% below the 52-week high of €43.48 set on May 28, 2026. The gap between operational momentum and market sentiment will come into sharp focus when the company reports its fiscal fourth-quarter and full-year 2026 results on July 27.

The Polaris Forge 1 campus in Ellendale, North Dakota, exemplifies the shift. In early July, Phase 1 of Building 2 added 75 megawatts on schedule, pushing the site's live AI capacity to 175 megawatts. The entire facility — already fully leased under long-term contracts — is slated to expand to 400 megawatts. While the infrastructure can still support blockchain applications, the real driver is AI and high-performance computing workloads, a pivot that has redefined Applied Digital's business model.

That pivot is already showing up in revenue. Demand from cloud provider CoreWeave has fueled a 139% surge in sales, according to management. More broadly, hyperscaler capital expenditure has jumped from roughly $400 billion to around $700 billion annually, creating a tailwind for data-center operators across the board. The recovery in Applied Digital's stock on Monday mirrored a broader rebound among peers such as IREN, TeraWulf, and Core Scientific, all of which had suffered double-digit losses in the preceding month.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Applied Digital?

But the rally remains tentative. After the initial surge, profit-taking trimmed some of the gains, and investors are acutely aware of the structural risks that persist: multi-year contracts with hyperscalers sit alongside elevated debt levels and ongoing cash burn. The options market underlines the uncertainty. On Monday, about 51,000 contracts changed hands, with a put/call ratio of 0.25 — well below the typical 0.4 — suggesting elevated call interest. Implied volatility for the coming month surged to 116.39, in the top quartile of its historical range, and options pricing implies a 50% probability that the stock will move more than 13.72% (or $3.81) around the earnings announcement.

Technically, the shares remain fragile. The Relative Strength Index of 34.9 indicates the stock is still in oversold territory despite the bounce, leaving no room for complacency. Analysts have not revised their price targets based on the one-day move, and the consensus estimate calls for a loss of €0.20 per share on revenue of roughly €92.6 million in the fiscal fourth quarter. Those figures will reveal how heavily the aggressive build-out is weighing on the balance sheet.

For Applied Digital, the July 27 report represents a critical juncture. The company has secured the capacity backlog to support its AI ambitions, but the market needs to see that the financials can eventually catch up. Until then, the stock's recovery remains a high-stakes wait-and-see.
