ASML Faces a Strategic Pivot as a Massive AI Bet Meets a Market Rotation — All Eyes on July 15

Bernstein lifts ASML target to €2,300 on AI-driven EUV demand, but profit-taking after Samsung earnings sends ASML down 5%. Earnings on July 15 will decide direction.

ASML Stock at Crossroads: Analyst €2,300 Target vs Sector Sell-Off

The coming days will determine whether ASML can shake off a sector-wide correction or confirm it. The Dutch lithography champion is caught between a sharply raised analyst target that points to €2,300 and a wave of profit-taking that began in Seoul and swept across global chip stocks. At the centre of this tension sits the company’s own earnings release on July 15, when investors will look for an order book robust enough to override the rotation.

Bernstein analysts have lifted their price objective for ASML from $1,971 to $2,623 (roughly €2,300), maintaining an “Outperform” rating. The call rests on a sprawling AI infrastructure build-out that, in Bernstein’s view, will supercharge demand for extreme ultraviolet lithography systems. The firm forecasts 91 EUV machine shipments in 2027, rising to 113 the following year. Revenue from EUV alone is expected to grow at a 30% compound annual rate to reach €42.7 billion by 2030, propelling total group sales to €80 billion. Earnings per share would hit €97 in that scenario. The numbers are ambitious, but they reflect a conviction that ASML’s monopoly in EUV will translate into years of compounding growth.

Yet the immediate market narrative tells a different story. Samsung Electronics posted an almost 19-fold jump in quarterly operating profit to 89.4 trillion won — a record — only to see its own stock tumble nearly 7%. Investors used the good news to cash out, a classic “sell the news” reaction that cascaded through the sector. South Korea’s Kospi index dropped 4.91%, triggering a trading halt, and the selling quickly spread to chip-equipment names worldwide. ASML shares slid more than 5% in a single session, closing at €1,532 on Tuesday and pushing the weekly decline to 5.71%. The stock now sits about 12.4% below its 52-week high of €1,748, set just two weeks earlier.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Asml?

For the bulls, the current pullback is a valuation correction, not a fundamental one. The long-term thesis remains intact: hyperscalers such as Meta, Microsoft and Amazon could collectively pour up to $5.3 trillion into AI infrastructure by 2030, and ASML is the sole supplier of the EUV tools needed for cutting-edge logic and memory chips. Beyond EUV, the company is quietly expanding into advanced packaging, a move management has confirmed as part of a 10-to-15-year plan to capture growth in chip-to-chip interconnects. Bernstein’s €2,300 target implies nearly 50% upside from current levels, and the stock still trades more than 30% above its 200-day moving average of €1,155.57 — a sign that the long-term uptrend is technically intact.

The bears, however, warn that ASML’s valuation leaves no room for disappointment. The stock trades at an estimated 51.3 times 2026 earnings, and its annualised volatility of nearly 65% makes it acutely sensitive to any cooling of AI momentum. Morgan Stanley has flagged a potential rotation away from chipmakers toward cloud providers and cyclical sectors such as transport and biotechnology. If that rotation deepens, ASML — as a pure-play equipment supplier — would feel the pressure first. Geopolitics also casts a shadow: the Dutch trade minister is in Beijing this week for talks about export controls on advanced lithography tools, and while ASML does not ship EUV systems to China, the country accounts for roughly a fifth of expected 2026 revenue via DUV sales. Additional licence restrictions could hurt that exposure.

On the charts, the 14-day relative strength index stands at 48.2, a neutral reading that leaves room for either a bounce or further weakness. The immediate technical test is the 50-day moving average at €1,455.32. Holding above that level would frame the current move as a healthy pause within a year-to-date gain of 55%. A break below it, however, would open the door to the 100-day average at €1,328.88.

The July 15 earnings report will therefore be a binary event. If ASML delivers a strong order backlog, particularly for its new High-NA EUV machines, and issues an upbeat 2027-2028 outlook, the stock could recover toward €1,600. If the guidance is cautious or signals delayed customer spending, the sector rotation into defensive names may accelerate. For now, ASML is suspended between a long-range bull case built on artificial intelligence and a short-term market mood that prefers to take profits first and ask questions later.
