ASML's 100-System Pivot: The Bull Case Hinges on a Single Threshold

ASML stock faces pivotal Q2 earnings on July 15; analysts raise targets but market demands proof on EUV shipment numbers for 2027. AI capex super-cycle vs high valuation.

The narrative around ASML Holding is splitting in two. On one side, Deutsche Bank and Bernstein have lifted their price targets in consecutive days, pointing to an unstoppable wave of AI-driven chip investment. On the other, the stock has slipped 4.67% in the past week and is trading nearly 3% below its recent 52-week high of €1,748. The tension will come to a head when the Dutch lithography giant reports second-quarter earnings on 15 July 2026.

At the centre of the debate is a single operational target: the number of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography systems ASML can credibly commit to delivering in 2027. Morgan Stanley has pegged the critical threshold at 90 to 100 units. Clear the bar and the stock's premium valuation may find fresh justification; fall short and even the most bullish analyst calls could look stretched.

Deutsche Bank Research on 10 July raised its price target from €1,600 to €1,800, reiterating a "Buy" rating, while the stock closed the day at €1,552 — a 2.08% decline. That same week, Bernstein hoisted its target from $1,971 to $2,623, citing an expected jump in EUV shipments to 91 systems in 2027 and 113 in 2028. The bullish chorus is loud, but the market is demanding proof rather than promises.

The Bullish Case: A Capex Super-Cycle

The fundamental argument for ASML rests on the scale of investment plans from the world's largest memory-chip makers. Micron has earmarked $27 billion for capital expenditure in fiscal 2026. Samsung and SK Hynix together have committed roughly $520 billion over multiple years. All of that spending funnels through ASML's monopoly — it holds a 100% grip on EUV lithography and an estimated 98.5% share of immersion lithography.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Asml?

"We see ASML as the toll booth on the AI highway," sums up the prevailing view among analysts. The next technology cycle — High-NA EUV, priced at about €350 million per machine — is expected to drive annual EUV revenue growth of 30% to €42.7 billion by 2030. Bernstein's upgrade reflected that optimism, while Deutsche Bank's Robert Sanders pointed to a recovering end-market and shrugged off macro uncertainties.

Institutional investors have taken note. Main Street Research LLC increased its ASML position by 3.9% this year, and the broader IT sector has seen Q2 earnings estimates revised up by 8.7%. The stock still trades 5.05% above its 50-day moving average of €1,477.38 and has gained 125.71% over twelve months.

The Bearish Caveats: Valuation and Volatility

That rally has inflated the stock's price-to-earnings ratio to roughly 64.7, leaving almost no margin for error. A miss on net bookings in the second-quarter report — now viewed by some analysts as more important than revenue — could trigger a sharp reassessment.

The recent volatility gives a taste of the risks. On 9 July, ASML shares crashed more than 5% intraday as margin calls cascaded through Asian markets, only to close 4.21% higher. The 14-day relative strength index sits at 49.5, neutral and lacking momentum. With annualised volatility of 64.69%, violent swings are part of the package.

External threats also loom. Export controls and what some describe as "technology nationalism" remain a persistent headwind for ASML's China business. Although there are reports that Beijing may allow limited access to advanced chips for domestic AI firms, the existing restrictions on hardware sales still cap a meaningful revenue stream. Moreover, if memory-chip makers like Samsung miss their own numbers and trim investment, the 2027 growth story loses its foundation.

The Technical Guardrails

For now, the charts offer clear levels to watch. The 50-day moving average at €1,477.38 is the first line of support; a decisive break below it would signal a longer consolidation phase. The next floor sits at the 100-day average of €1,340.12. On the upside, a sustainable move above the 52-week high of €1,748 (set on 30 June) would open the path toward the new analyst targets.

The stock is currently 33.05% above its 200-day moving average of €1,166.48 — a gap that historically leaves room for pullbacks but has not derailed the longer-term uptrend.

What the 15 July Report Must Deliver

JPMorgan expects Q2 revenue of €8.7 billion, a 13.1% year-on-year increase, and earnings per share of €6.67. A gross margin around 51.7% is also anticipated. But the market is looking past those headline numbers. The critical data point is net bookings — specifically, the volume of EUV orders that underpin the 2027 delivery roadmap.

If ASML confirms its full-year 2026 revenue guidance of €36-€40 billion and signals net orders that support a run rate of 90 to 100 EUV systems for 2027, the stock could resume its climb toward the upper end of analyst targets, which stretch from €2,300 to the equivalent of €2,623 from Bernstein. Positive commentary around High-NA EUV adoption would amplify the effect.

Conversely, stagnant net bookings or cautious language about capacity expansion for 2027 would leave the shares vulnerable. A gross margin miss would compound the pressure, and without clarity on delivery volumes, investors might shift their focus back to the risk of a cyclical peak in the semiconductor equipment market.

The next concrete test arrives on 15 July. Until then, the gap between analyst enthusiasm and market scepticism remains the dominant theme — and one number, the EUV count for 2027, will decide which side wins.
