SK Hynix has placed an order with ASML worth roughly 11.9 trillion won, or about US$7.8 billion, locking in scarce EUV lithography capacity well into 2027. The South Korean memory titan needs the machines for its next-generation High-Bandwidth Memory and advanced DRAM production, and the deal covers deliveries to the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster and the M15X fab in Cheongju. It is a striking vote of confidence in the sole maker of these critical chipmaking tools.

ASML shares, however, have not caught fire. The stock closed Tuesday at €1,528.60, down nearly 6% over the past week and roughly 12.5% below the 52-week high of €1,748 reached on June 30. Over the long haul the picture is dramatically different — the equity has surged 125% over the last twelve months and is up more than 54% year-to-date — but near-term momentum has stalled.

The immediate headwind originates in Washington, where the proposed MATCH Act targeting tighter export controls on advanced technology has spooked investors. The legislation has not been enacted, and the US Commerce Department has suspended other trade restrictions until November 2026, but the regulatory limbo is creating what ODDO BHF calls a geopolitical overhang. On top of that, the market is seeing a natural period of consolidation ahead of ASML's second-quarter earnings release on July 15, when the company will update its €38.8 billion order backlog and any potential capacity plan adjustments for 2027.

Technical indicators reflect the indecision. The stock still trades comfortably above its 50-day moving average of €1,455.62 and its 200-day average of €1,155.56, but the 14-day RSI sits at a neutral 48, and the annualized 30-day volatility has climbed above 64%. This is a stock that remains jumpy.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Asml?

The primary source of long-term unease is China. ASML expects revenue from the region to fall to around 20% of total sales this year, down from roughly 33% in the prior year, as stricter controls and a normalization of demand take hold. If the MATCH Act becomes law, that decline could accelerate. JPMorgan warns that in a worst-case scenario, earnings per share could take a 10% hit if both new sales and the lucrative maintenance business in China are curtailed. Degroof Petercam, by contrast, pegs the potential revenue loss at a single-digit percentage, arguing that other regions can partially offset Chinese shortfalls.

Not everyone is focused on the downside. The structural demand for ASML's machines remains immense, with AI, satellite, and robotics applications driving chip orders faster than the company can build tools. Management recently raised its 2026 revenue forecast to between €36 billion and €40 billion. The SK Hynix deal alone — worth roughly 24 EUV scanners to be delivered by December 2027 — adds a thick layer of visibility to that outlook. Meanwhile, ASML continues its €12 billion share buyback program launched on January 28, a signal of confidence in its cash-generation ability.

Investors now face a binary setup. If ASML confirms its annual guidance and shows robust order inflow from memory and logic customers outside China, a recovery toward the June high looks plausible. But any sign that the Chinese revenue downturn is deepening faster than expected could trigger a sharper correction. The stock currently sits 32% above its 200-day average, leaving ample room for a pullback on bad news.

Asml at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The July 15 earnings call will be the next crucial test. The market will be parsing the Chinese order book, any commentary on the MATCH Act's progress, and whether the company sees a need to adjust its capacity buildout for either standard EUV or the next-generation High-NA systems. For now, ASML occupies an unusual spot: flush with demand yet priced for an uncertain political outcome.
