BASF Piles on the Pressure: Price Hikes, a Biofuels Push, and a Pivotal Shareholder Vote All Converge

BASF raises plastics additives prices up to 25%, partners with Nutrien on low-carbon biofuels, and advances Agricultural Solutions spinoff ahead of April 30 AGM.

The German chemicals giant is entering a critical 48-hour window with a flurry of moves designed to reshape its portfolio and bolster its bottom line. From a sharp price increase on key plastics additives to a strategic biofuels tie-up in North America, BASF is sending a clear signal about where it sees future growth — and where it is prepared to cut ties.

The most immediate shock to the market came with the announcement that BASF is raising prices across its entire global portfolio of additives by up to 25%. The increase covers antioxidants, process stabilizers, and light stabilizers used in plastics manufacturing. The move is a direct response to mounting cost pressures along the chemical value chain, which have been squeezing margins for months. By passing these costs on to customers, BASF is attempting to shore up profitability in its specialty chemicals business.

The market has taken note. BASF shares are currently trading just shy of their 52-week high of €54.70, having gained roughly 22% since the start of the year. However, the relative strength index (RSI) has dipped to 22.6, a reading that suggests the stock is technically oversold despite its recent run.

Meanwhile, the company is also laying groundwork for a very different kind of growth. On April 28, BASF and Canadian fertilizer giant Nutrien announced a partnership aimed at helping US farmers tap into low-carbon intensity (CI) biofuel programs. The collaboration leverages two digital platforms from BASF’s xarvio portfolio: xarvio BIOENERGY, which tracks and documents the carbon footprint of corn grown for ethanol, and xarvio FIELD MANAGER, which provides field-specific agronomic data. The combined dashboard gives bio-refineries a verifiable data trail for certifying their feedstocks.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BASF?

The timing of the Nutrien deal is no accident. It lands just days before BASF’s annual general meeting on April 30, where shareholders will vote on whether to spin off the Agricultural Solutions division into a standalone subsidiary — the formal precursor to a planned initial public offering on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange in 2027. From May 1, the new entity will operate under its own management board, led by Livio Tedeschi, who has headed the division since 2022. A partnership that underscores the standalone value of the agribusiness unit so close to the vote carries obvious strategic weight.

Thursday, April 30, is shaping up to be a packed day. BASF will release its first-quarter 2026 results at 7:00 am, followed three hours later by the AGM at the Congress Center Rosengarten in Mannheim. CEO Dr. Markus Kamieth is expected to outline the company’s strategic direction. On the agenda is a proposed dividend of €2.25 per share for the 2025 financial year, which, if approved, would be paid out on May 6.

Also in play is the ongoing share buyback program, which has a volume of up to €1.5 billion. As of mid-April, BASF had already repurchased nearly 19.4 million shares. The program is scheduled to wrap up by the end of June.

BASF at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

For the full year, BASF expects EBITDA before special items to land between €6.2 billion and €7.0 billion. The wide range reflects persistent uncertainty driven by currency fluctuations. Whether the additive price hike will stick with customers is a question the first-quarter numbers will begin to answer — at least for the period before the increase took effect.
