Battery Ruling Tightens Safety Standards as German Industry Rolls Out Smarter Tracking

A May 2026 ruling by the Landgericht Ravensburg has sent a clear signal to manufacturers and operators of battery storage systems: compliance documentation must be airtight. The court found that certain battery storage models violated Germany’s Product Safety Act (ProdSG), identifying specific cells as the cause of a fire and barring the systems from being placed on the market. The decision sharpens liability risks for companies that cannot prove their safety measures are both verified and digitally traceable.
That legal pressure is already reshaping industrial practice. In mid-June, Litum introduced a new family of real-time location systems (RTLS) certified for explosive atmospheres in Zones 1 and 2 — the most hazardous areas in chemical, oil, and pharmaceutical plants. The hardware combines Ultra-Wideband (UWB) and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to achieve sub-meter accuracy. A gateway and specialised tags feed live positioning data, giving plant operators in petrochemicals, mining, and similar sectors a way to monitor personnel movements in dangerous zones. The system is available immediately.
Warehouse logistics are also turning to digital tools to reduce human error. The same week, leogistics GmbH expanded its SAP Extended Warehouse Management (EWM) portfolio with a “NextGen Packdialog” module. It replaces paper instructions with visual packing guides and integrated photo documentation — a move aimed at cutting mistakes and easing compliance burdens, especially for hazardous goods. Built on SAPUI5 and the SAP Cloud Application Programming Model, the extension preserves the clean-core principle while making the user interface more intuitive.
At the other end of the production chain, BASF is pushing Ethernet-APL (Advanced Physical Layer) into its greenfield projects. The technology improves diagnostic capabilities and shortens loop-check times during commissioning. At the company’s Zhanjiang site in China, several thousand field switches were already installed in summer 2025.
Fire safety is also getting a digital upgrade. At the INTERSCHUTZ trade fair in mid-June, FIREIQ Technologies GmbH presented an intelligent fire extinguisher system that continuously monitors the status of each extinguisher and checks it digitally. Market launch is scheduled for early 2027, with the units designed to operate for ten years.
