The architects of the world’s first mRNA vaccine are stepping away from the operating table. BioNTech’s co-founders, Ugur Sahin and Özlem Türeci, will leave management at the end of 2026 to launch a new venture focused on next-generation mRNA technology. The Mainz-based company will retain a minority stake in the spin-off, with additional milestone payments and royalties tied to its progress. The move marks a clear generational shift as the group pivots fully toward oncology — and hands the reins to a broader leadership team.

Meanwhile, the company is deploying a billion-dollar shield to support its stock. A share repurchase program worth up to $1 billion kicked off in early June, funded entirely from BioNTech’s cash reserves. Chief Financial Officer Ramón Zapata described the buyback as a logical step in the firm’s capital allocation strategy. The program runs through May 2027, giving management ample time to steady the share price during a period of transition.

Investors have taken a measured view so far. BioNTech’s stock closed at €81.95 on Tuesday, edging up roughly 2% over the past week but still posting a slight year-to-date decline of less than 1%. Technically, the shares are hovering near the 50-day moving average of around €80 — a neutral zone that offers little directional conviction.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BioNTech?

The bigger story, however, is unfolding in the lab. BioNTech has seven late-stage clinical readouts scheduled for the second half of 2026, with total Phase 3 studies expected to reach 15 by year-end. Early data presented at the ASCO annual meeting in May and June showed encouraging anti-tumor activity from the bispecific antibody pumitamig, particularly in lung cancer when combined with chemotherapy, along with promising results for gotistobart. A regulatory filing for trastuzumab pamirtecan (T-Pam) in endometrial cancer is also on track for this year, potentially paving the way for the company’s first oncology market launch.

Financially, BioNTech is sitting on a war chest of €16.8 billion in cash as of the end of March. That firepower is critical: the company posted a net loss of €531.9 million in the first quarter as COVID-19 vaccine sales continued to slide in Europe and the U.S. The shrinking legacy business raises the stakes for the oncology pipeline. Success would validate the multi-platform strategy spanning immunomodulators, antibody-drug conjugates, and mRNA-based cancer therapies. Failure would leave BioNTech exposed to mounting operational losses and intense competition from established pharma giants.

Analysts have set a consensus price target of €106.64, not far from the 52-week high. Whether that level is reached depends entirely on the data. The next major catalysts are the remaining 2026 readouts and updates on the T-Pam filing. If the results disappoint, the fading vaccine revenue will once again dominate the narrative, putting renewed pressure on the current share price near €82.

BioNTech now faces a twin test: proving its oncology arsenal can deliver blockbuster therapies while managing a leadership transition that reshapes the company’s scientific identity. The next twelve months will be decisive.
