BYD has reclaimed the title of the world’s best-selling pure-electric vehicle maker, delivering 557,090 battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) in the second quarter of 2026 — roughly 77,000 units more than Tesla managed over the same period. The reversal comes after Tesla briefly wrested back the lead in the first quarter, underscoring how quickly the competitive pendulum can swing in the fast-evolving EV market.

Yet the Chinese giant’s stock has barely reflected that momentum. Shares ended the week at €9.58, up 3.01% on the day but only 0.47% higher from the previous Friday. Since the start of the year the equity has shed 12.55%, and over the past 12 months it has slumped 26.87%. At 35.27% below its 52-week high of €14.80 from July 2025, the stock is trading well under both its 50-day moving average of €9.76 and its 200-day average of €10.70. The relative strength index of 55.8 signals neutral to slightly positive sentiment, while the annualised 30-day volatility remains elevated at 41.67%. The company’s market capitalisation stands at approximately €86.48 billion.

Overseas expansion is driving the rebound. In June, international markets accounted for roughly 43% of BYD’s total deliveries. The UK is a particularly bright spot: first-half registrations jumped to 37,995 vehicles — nearly double the year-ago figure, giving BYD an 8.74% share of the British plug-in segment. The SEAL U DM-i was the best-selling plug-in hybrid in that market. On the group’s broader horizon, chairman Wang Chuanfu set an overseas sales target of more than 1.5 million vehicles for 2026, pointing to the ramp-up of the second-generation Blade battery that began in March and is adding 20,000 to 30,000 extra vehicles per month.

Back home, BYD remains dominant, holding a 22.3% market share of China’s new-energy vehicle segment. Group-wide sales including hybrids reached 403,472 units in June, up 5.5% year-on-year.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

New models are arriving thick and fast to defend that lead. The Seagull, already the world’s fifth-best-selling EV in the first five months of 2026 with more than 125,000 units sold globally, is getting a substantial makeover. The second-generation Seagull stretches 4,205 mm in length — 425 mm longer than its predecessor — with a 150 mm longer wheelbase. Output climbs to 95 kW (127 hp) and top speed to 150 km/h. In a notable step up for the entry-level segment, top trims will feature a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor paired with the DiPilot 300 driver-assistance pack, powered by an Nvidia Drive Orin chip for semi-automated driving and automated parking. The car is expected to launch in China late in the third quarter of 2026, starting at 69,800 yuan (roughly US$10,000). Internationally, it will continue to be sold as the Dolphin Mini, Dolphin Surf or Atto 1 — though the European version remains shorter at 3,990 mm.

Meanwhile, the Fangchengbao Shark — a plug-in hybrid pickup that debuted overseas as the BYD SHARK in Mexico in May 2024 — has now been registered for the Chinese market. Measuring 5,457 mm long and riding a 3,260 mm wheelbase, it packs a 1.5-litre turbo engine delivering 143 kW, paired with a 170 kW front motor and a 150 kW rear motor. System output is around 436 hp (321 kW), with a 0-100 km/h sprint of 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 180 km/h. The 29.58 kWh LFP Blade battery provides 100 km of electric range (NEDC) and combined fuel consumption drops to 7.5 L/100 km when the battery is depleted. DiSus-P hydraulic body control and three differential locks underline off-road intent. The expected entry price is about 200,000 yuan, placing it against the Great Wall Cannon Hi4-T and Nissan Frontier Pro PHEV.

On the emotional side of the showroom, BYD’s premium brand Denza unveiled the Z — a two-door electric supercar with a triple-motor setup — at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on July 9. Multiple variants have been registered, including hardtop and convertible versions.

BYD at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The next major checkpoint for investors arrives on August 28, when BYD reports its second-quarter earnings. The company will need to demonstrate that its operational momentum is translating into bottom-line improvement — a crucial test for a stock that continues to trade at a deep discount to its recent highs.
