As BYD prepares to release its first-quarter results on April 28, the world's largest electric vehicle maker is advancing on two distinct fronts. The company is not only pushing the technological envelope with a groundbreaking new charging system but is also seeking a seat at Europe's most influential automotive policy table.

The centerpiece of its Beijing Auto Show debut, starting Friday, is a next-generation battery for the updated Atto 3 crossover. The specifications are striking: the battery can reach a 70% charge in just five minutes, with a near-full charge taking only nine. Even in extreme cold of -10°C, the charging time extends by a mere three minutes. To support this technology, BYD plans a massive infrastructure rollout, aiming to have 20,000 of these super-fast charging stations operational globally by year-end.

This product offensive comes at a crucial time for the Atto 3, known as the Yuan Plus in China. The model has faced severe headwinds domestically, with deliveries plummeting 73% year-over-year in the first quarter amid intense price competition. The revamped version, which is larger and offers a maximum range of up to 630 kilometers, is designed to reverse that trend. The new charging system will also debut in Europe on the luxury Denza Z9 GT, positioning BYD directly against established premium brands.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

Concurrently, BYD is pursuing a strategic political move by applying for membership in the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA). Gaining entry would mark a historic first for a Chinese automaker within Europe's premier automotive lobby, providing BYD with a direct voice in Brussels during negotiations over emissions standards, trade policy, and regulatory frameworks. This effort aligns with BYD's broader strategy to build brand value in Europe rather than compete solely on price.

The company's global expansion is accelerating despite mixed overall delivery figures. While BYD shipped over 300,000 vehicles in March—a sequential increase—it marked the seventh consecutive month of year-on-year decline, with a 20% drop. The international business, however, is a bright spot. BYD exported approximately 320,000 vehicles in Q1 and has recently raised its full-year overseas sales target to 1.5 million units, up from an earlier goal of 1.3 million. This follows total global deliveries of about 4.6 million vehicles in 2025.

The upcoming earnings report will be scrutinized for the financial impact of domestic price wars on profitability. Whether BYD succeeds in joining ACEA remains an open question, as the association has traditionally represented only European manufacturers. Its decision will signal how far the continent's auto industry is willing to extend its boundaries. For now, BYD is charging ahead, both technologically and strategically, as it navigates a complex global market.
