BYD's European Sales Surge 136% but Denza Slump, Stock Near 52-Week Low

The Chinese electric-vehicle giant is living a tale of two markets. While BYD’s European registrations have more than doubled in May, the company’s domestic premium brand Denza is suffering a sharp sales slump, and the stock remains anchored near its 52-week low. The contrasting signals leave investors guessing which narrative will prevail.

Europe provided a bright spot last month. New registrations across the EU, EFTA and the UK surged 136.6% year-on-year to reach 32,380 vehicles, pushing BYD’s market share from 1.2% to 2.8%. The broader European auto market grew just 3.6% in the period to around 1.15 million units, with battery-electric vehicles climbing 39.1% and plug-in hybrids up 13.2%. Major incumbents like Renault, Stellantis and Volkswagen each lost between 1% and 3% of their market share. Among Chinese peers, Leapmotor posted a staggering 465.1% increase and Chery added 244.1%, while BYD’s 136.6% gain was nonetheless the third-fastest. Yet the good news has done little for the share price.

Back home, the picture is more troubled. Denza, BYD’s premium offshoot, saw its sales drop by nearly 28% in the first five months of the year compared with the same period in 2024, despite a modest pick-up in May alone. To reignite demand, the group has launched the new N8L, a six-seat plug-in hybrid SUV packed with cutting-edge technology. The base version carries a starting price of roughly 320,000 yuan, significantly below its pre-sale level, as BYD pursues aggressive pricing. The vehicle features a high-voltage architecture and the company’s proprietary Blade battery, capable of charging to 70% in just five minutes at specialised stations, with a combined range of around 1,500 kilometres. BYD’s total Jan-May sales – just over 1.4 million units – slipped about 20% year-on-year, though strong export volumes provided some offset.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

The stock market remains unimpressed. Shares closed the most recent trading session at €8.50, only €0.13 above the 52-week trough of €8.37 set a few days earlier. Year to date, the equity has lost about 22%, and the 12-month decline is roughly 42%. The relative strength index at 21 signals an extremely oversold condition – even more pronounced than the 22.5 reading from just days earlier – and the stock trades more than 21% below its 200-day moving average of €10.88. The disconnect between operational momentum and market valuation is stark.

Overshadowing the entire picture is the threat of new European trade barriers. The European Commission is reportedly preparing compensatory tariffs targeting Chinese hybrid vehicles, with BYD, Chery and SAIC in its crosshairs. Brussels declined to comment on the leaked plans. Until a qualified majority of EU member states votes on the measures, the tariff overhang could keep a lid on the share price, no matter how strong the European registration data. For now, the next three months of Denza N8L sales will offer a crucial gauge: if the premium brand fails to turn around, a slide below €8.37 could come swiftly.
