BYD Takes Over Beijing Auto Show Floor as Earnings Pressure Mounts
23.04.2026 - 22:42:02 | boerse-global.deThe 19th Beijing International Automotive Exhibition opens tomorrow with BYD commanding the entire E3 hall — a physical manifestation of ambition that stands in stark contrast to the financial headwinds gathering back at headquarters. The Chinese EV giant is rolling out one of the broadest product offensives in its history across five brands, even as the board prepares to scrutinize first-quarter results just four days later.
A Multi-Brand Spectacle
Five marques — Dynasty, Ocean, Denza, Yangwang, and Fangchengbao — are all fielding new metal in Beijing. The headline act is the world premiere of the Denza Z Cabriolet, while Fangchengbao unveils the FORMULA sports coupe as the centerpiece of its premium push. That sub-brand has been on a tear: first-quarter sales hit nearly 65,000 vehicles, a 236 percent surge year-on-year.
The Dynasty line introduces a refreshed Tang and the third-generation Yuan PLUS. From the Ocean stable come the Sealion 08 and Seal 08. But the most technically significant debut may be the overhauled Atto 3 — not merely a facelift, BYD insists, but a vehicle with noticeably altered dimensions and dramatically upgraded charging capability. The electric SUV can now sprint from 10 to 70 percent charge in five minutes, and from 10 to 97 percent in roughly nine minutes.
Yangwang brings multiple new entries, including the U8L long-wheelbase PHEV with torque-vectoring drive for serious off-road work. Fangchengbao is also launching an entirely new product line, though details remain under wraps until the show opens.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?
Technology Takes Center Stage
Beyond the sheet metal, BYD is using Beijing to showcase its technology platforms. Version 5.0 of the "God's Eye" intelligent driving system gets its public debut alongside the second-generation Blade battery and a new ultra-fast charging architecture.
Live demonstrations will test the hardware's limits: a fast-charge trial at minus 30 degrees Celsius and a fully automated parking zone. Outside, visitors can tackle off-road courses designed for Yangwang and Fangchengbao vehicles. The charging infrastructure story is also advancing — BYD aims to have 20,000 fast-charging stations operational by year-end.
Export Engine Revs Higher
The Beijing blitz isn't just about domestic bragging rights. BYD is targeting roughly 1.5 million vehicle exports by 2026, leveraging higher margins overseas to cushion the brutal price war at home. That strategy is already gaining traction. In Brazil, BYD climbed to fifth place among all auto brands by early 2026 and dominates the EV segment there. March 2026 saw overseas passenger car and pickup sales jump 65 percent from the same period last year. Cumulative NEV sales have now surpassed 15.8 million units.
The Numbers That Loom
The timing of the show is deliberate — and uncomfortable. On April 28, BYD's board convenes in Shenzhen to approve unaudited first-quarter results. Analysts expect revenue of around 134 billion yuan, a decline of roughly 21 percent year-on-year. Earnings per share are forecast at 0.55 yuan, also below the prior-year level.
Full-year 2024 told a different story: revenue climbed 29 percent, net profit rose 34 percent. But the picture has since darkened. In the fourth quarter of 2025, net profit collapsed 38 percent and vehicle revenue fell 17 percent, squeezed by sinking prices and thinning margins.
BYD at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
The home market is showing cracks despite BYD's dominant position. The company led China's passenger car market with roughly 303,000 units sold recently — but that figure represented a near-53 percent plunge from the prior year. Rivals like Aito (up 86 percent) and Geely Galaxy (up 18 percent) are charging hard. Even CATL, BYD's chief battery rival, is planning its own tech day with a record package of new technologies.
BYD's Beijing showcase is a bid to shift the narrative through sheer product firepower. Whether that's enough to reverse the earnings trajectory will become clear when the board meets on April 28.
