Climate Adaptation and Interactive Health Days: Germany’s New Workplace Wellbeing Push

The intersection of workplace health and climate change is reshaping prevention strategies across Germany. The PORR Group, a construction and infrastructure company, is expanding its use of thermal renovation, green-roof concepts, and geothermal energy, reporting annual growth of 20 to 30 percent in its geothermal division. Meanwhile, the German Association of Cities and Municipalities called in late June for a constitutional amendment to enshrine climate protection and climate adaptation as a joint task of federal and state governments. With municipal investment arrears exceeding €230 billion, the association stressed the need for solid financing. Federal Environment Minister Schneider countered that heat protection remains primarily the responsibility of states and municipalities, noting that a €100 billion special fund is already available.
Against this backdrop, preventive health initiatives are becoming more visible. On 1 July 2026, the health insurer BIG direkt gesund marks its 30th anniversary with a public health day in Dortmund. Local governments are also stepping up. The day before, the district of Heinsberg held its own employee health day, offering lay resuscitation drills, ergonomic consultations, and blood pressure and blood sugar screenings. Specialised providers like the Centre for Health Promotion in Worms have expanded their portfolios with certified online courses on nutrition and relaxation.

Inclusion is another piece of the puzzle. The clothing manufacturer HAKRO, together with the Weckelweiler Gemeinschaften in Schrozberg, has run an external work group since September 2017 where people with disabilities work in the logistics centre. The group is being expanded from six to up to twelve participants per day.
Demand for skilled staff is rising too. The health insurer hkk is recruiting health scientists at its Bremen location to build prevention projects under Germany’s Social Code Book V. Application deadlines run until early July.
Smaller businesses are not left out. On 1 July, the Wood and Plastics Economic Association of Saarland, in cooperation with the Wood and Metal Trade Association (BGHM), offers a free basic seminar for companies with up to 50 employees, aiming to lay the groundwork for structured health management.
