Commerzbank Faces Mixed Signals: Upside Profit Outlook Meets Weak German Data
Published on 06/25/2026 at 04:22 | Redaktion boerse-global.deCommerzbank’s shares came under pressure on Wednesday as a sharp drop in German business activity tempered the optimism surrounding the lender’s upgraded earnings ambition. The stock closed at €37.45, down 1.2% on the day, dragged lower by a broader market selloff that saw the DAX tumble below the 25,000-point threshold.
The weakness in the macro backdrop was underscored by a flash purchasing managers’ index for Germany’s private sector, which slumped to 48.0 in June – well below consensus forecasts. The services component was particularly alarming, plunging to 46.8, a level that signals contraction. For banks, a shrinking economy typically translates into weaker loan demand and higher credit risks, forcing a more conservative stance in corporate lending.
Against that headwind, Commerzbank’s own fundamentals remain robust. Management raised its group-wide net profit target for 2026 to at least €3.4 billion in May, up from an earlier goal. That bullish revision was backed by a strong first-quarter performance: the bank reported an operating result of €1.4 billion, with net interest income contributing a solid €2 billion. Net earnings for the period stood at €913 million.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Commerzbank?
Despite Wednesday’s pullback, the technical picture still looks encouraging. The stock is trading just shy of its 52-week high of €38.85, reached on June 19, with the gap currently a mere 3.7%. More importantly, Commerzbank’s shares remain comfortably above the 50-day moving average of €36.29, a level that, if maintained, would keep the medium-term uptrend intact.
Adding to the mix, a handful of clients reported sporadic login failures on the bank’s mobile app and online platform on June 24. The glitches, flagged by sites such as Netzwelt, appeared concentrated in cities like Cologne and Berlin but were not widespread. Commerzbank did not issue an official outage notice and steered users to try again later. For now, the temporary technical hiccups have had no material impact on operations or investor sentiment.
With the second-quarter results due on August 6, the market will be watching closely to see whether the bank’s upgraded profit trajectory can withstand the gathering clouds over the German economy.
