D-Wave Quantum Preps for a Defining Moment as Bullish Analyst Targets Face a Share Price Sink

D-Wave Quantum faces a pivotal Investor Day on June 1 with record $33.4M bookings and analyst upside of 70%, despite a 28% YTD stock decline and mixed Q1 results.

D-Wave Quantum is heading into its first-ever Investor Day on June 1 with an enviable order book and analyst forecasts that imply more than 70% upside from current levels. Yet the stock has been heading the other way: down 28.15% since the start of the year, with a weekly loss of 15.4% ahead of the event. The disconnect between Wall Street’s enthusiasm and the market’s jitters is the central drama as the company attempts to convince investors that a record pipeline will soon translate into dependable revenue.

The mixed signals were laid bare in the first-quarter results released on May 16. Revenue slumped to $2.86 million from $15 million a year earlier, well short of the $4.19 million analysts had penciled in. The net loss widened to $18.36 million, though on a per-share basis the company beat expectations at a loss of $0.05 versus a consensus estimate of $0.08. The sharp drop in quarterly sales reflects the lumpy nature of large system deals — the comparisons swing wildly when big-ticket deliveries fall into different quarters.

On the other side of the coin, bookings hit a record $33.4 million, up from just $1.6 million in the prior-year period — a staggering 1,994% surge. The order book was anchored by a $20 million system sale to Florida Atlantic University and a $10 million enterprise contract. That deal with FAU is more than a one-off equipment purchase: D-Wave is training staff and students, and the Advantage2 system is slated for physical installation before year-end, embedding quantum resources into research and curricula. Such repeatable, course-based engagements are exactly the kind of revenue-building relationships the company needs to smooth out its lumpy sales profile.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying D-Wave Quantum?

D-Wave has also broadened its technology arsenal, acquiring Quantum Circuits to add error-corrected superconducting gate-model systems to its established annealing lineup. The cash position is robust: $588.4 million in cash and marketable securities as of March 31, a 93% increase year over year, providing ample runway for the transition from one-off hardware sales toward recurring Quantum-as-a-Service revenue.

Analysts remain firmly in the bullish camp despite trimming some price targets. Mizuho lowered its target to $29, Canaccord to $41, and Jefferies’ Kevin Garrigan holds steady at $45. Among the 13 analysts covering the stock, the average rating is a “Strong Buy” and the consensus price target sits at $34.77, with a wide range from $13 to $45 that reflects varying views on how quickly the quantum computing market will mature. Technical indicators add to the tension: the stock’s relative strength index (RSI) of 30 signals oversold territory, while annualized volatility above 111% underscores the wild swings that have kept many retail investors on edge.

The road to the Investor Day is packed with events aimed at making the case. D-Wave will appear at the J.P. Morgan Global Technology Conference in Boston on May 20, the virtual Canaccord Genuity Quantum Symposium on May 21, and the TD Cowen Technology Conference in New York on May 28. On June 1, management must step onto the NYSE podium and explain how the $33.4 million backlog will eventually become a predictable revenue stream — not just a series of headline-grabbing orders. Later that month, on June 18, the company will host “Qubits Europe 2026: Quantum Realized” in London, featuring live hardware demos and a quantum-classical blockchain testnet in partnership with Postquant Labs. The coming weeks will test whether D-Wave can turn its technological lead into the kind of commercial traction that closes the gap between analyst optimism and market skepticism.
