Deutsche Telekom's buyback pause leaves shares near 52-week low despite strong Q1 earnings and guidance raise. Regulatory test and restructuring uncertainty weigh on sentiment ahead of August results.

The end of a steady buyback programme on 30 June leaves Deutsche Telekom shares without their most reliable source of demand at a time when the stock is already flirting with its 52-week low. The second tranche of the current repurchase scheme, which has seen the company scoop up nearly 17 million of its own shares since April, will expire as planned — and no immediate replacement has been announced.

At Friday's close of €26.31, the shares sit just 2.33 percent above their one-year trough. Over the past month the stock has shed almost 11 percent, and over twelve months the decline approaches 15 percent. Technical indicators offer little comfort: the relative strength index reads 34, a level that signals oversold conditions but lacks any obvious catalyst for a reversal.

Operating strength, market weakness

The operational picture tells a very different story. Deutsche Telekom reported organic revenue growth of 4.7 percent in the first quarter, while adjusted EBITDA AL jumped 7.5 percent. The numbers prompted management to raise full-year guidance, now targeting around €47.5 billion in adjusted EBITDA AL and more than €19.8 billion in free cash flow AL.

Fitch Ratings underscored the progress last month by upgrading the group's credit rating to A- from BBB+, citing the strong market position and robust cash generation of the U.S. subsidiary T-Mobile US. The agency expects leverage to remain near 2.0 times EBITDA.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

Yet none of that has been enough to prop up the share price. Higher bond yields and rising interest rate expectations are weighing on capital-intensive business models, and telecoms are squarely in that camp. The stock trades at 13.1 times expected 2026 earnings and 11.7 times 2027 — well below the 10-year average of 17.8.

Two clouds on the horizon

The buyback hiatus is only one of the headwinds. Persistent speculation about a corporate restructuring has dampened investor appetite. Media reports suggest the company is considering a new holding structure that would fully integrate T-Mobile US, though no official confirmation has been given. That uncertainty is keeping many buyers on the sidelines.

Simultaneously, a nationwide network quality test by the German regulator Bundesnetzagentur is underway until 1 July, with citizens reporting real-world performance via an app. The results will be published in the autumn. Weak outcomes could trigger stricter regulatory requirements for network expansion, adding to investment pressure.

The next curtain-raiser

Until the second-quarter results are released on 6 August, the stock lacks a clear directional trigger. The buyback pause, the merger fog and the regulatory test all converge on a period that could test investor patience — even as the underlying business continues to fire on all cylinders.
