Deutsche Telekom Insiders Buy the Dip After World Cup Deal Fails to Lift Stock
Published on 07/08/2026 at 17:48 | Redaktion boerse-global.deThe contrast between Deutsche Telekom's strategic progress and its stock performance has rarely been starker. The telecoms group secured exclusive German broadcasting rights for 44 matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup via its MagentaTV platform, while its North American pay-TV arm will carry all 104 tournament games — a notable coup particularly given that public broadcasters ARD and ZDF only obtained sublicences for 60 matches through a swap tied to European Championship rights. Yet the shares continue to languish near their one-year trough, closing at €25.62 on the day, down 0.89%, with a 12-month decline of 17.49%.
The disconnect has prompted action from both the boardroom and the corporate treasury. Rodrigo Francisco Diehl, a member of the executive board, acquired 3,000 shares on 30 June and again on 1 July at an average price of around €24.40 — a classic signal of insider conviction at a moment when the stock is plumbing lows. Just days earlier, the shares had touched a 52-week floor of €23.54, a level that represents a 25.47% drop from the February high of €34.35.
Alongside the directors' dealings, Deutsche Telekom is ploughing ahead with its 2026 buyback programme. The third tranche, running from 1 July to the end of September, targets up to €560 million in repurchases on Xetra as part of an annual €2 billion commitment. In late June alone the group bought back 727,344 shares at an average price of roughly €24.79, bringing the total since the programme's April inception to about 19.3 million shares.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?
The technical picture remains challenging. The 50-day moving average stands at €27.45 and the 200-day at €28.72, both well above the current price. The relative strength index sits at 41.8, indicating neutral territory rather than a clear oversold condition. The sell-off was triggered in part by rising interest-rate and inflation expectations, with the telecom sector proving especially sensitive to the geopolitical jolt from the Iran conflict earlier this year. Last week's modest recovery — the stock gained 5.35% over seven days — has done little to alter the broader downtrend.
Analysts, however, are not abandoning the stock. Barclays trimmed its price target from €39.50 to €36.50 in early July but maintained an Overweight rating, implying upside of roughly 45% from current levels. The wider consensus remains bullish too, with a mean 12-month target of €37.81 — a figure that dwarfs the present €25.62. On a forward earnings basis, the valuation has become significantly cheaper: the 2026 price-to-earnings ratio is 12.7 times, falling to 11.3 times for 2027, both far below the 10-year historical average of 17.8. The dividend yield has consequently climbed to 4.4%, attracting income-focused investors even as growth-oriented capital stays on the sidelines.
Operationally, the group remains steady. First-quarter 2026 revenue edged up to €29.87 billion, with earnings per share of €0.42. The next quarterly report, due in early August, will be the critical test of whether the World Cup rights have begun to translate into MagentaTV subscriber growth and whether the buyback programme is gaining traction. For now, a sustained move back above €26.00 would be needed to signal a meaningful shift in sentiment — but with management buying alongside a generous repurchase plan, the market's patience may yet be rewarded.
