Deutsche Telekom is threading a needle between big-picture European infrastructure ambitions and a relentless campaign to return cash to shareholders. The Bonn-based group has just been handed the reins of PETRUS2, an EU project designed to build a cross-border quantum communication network called EuroQCI. Working alongside Airbus, Thales and SES, the operator aims to create unhackable data links between member states — a move that stretches its identity well beyond the traditional telecoms terrain.

Yet at the same time, the company is vacuuming up its own stock at an accelerating pace. Between 6 and 10 July, Deutsche Telekom bought back 2,321,535 shares on Xetra at an average price of €25.5679, following an initial tranche of 908,705 shares scooped up from 1 to 3 July for roughly €22.5 million. Those purchases fall under the third segment of the 2026 buyback programme, which earmarks up to €560 million — or a maximum of 23.5 million shares — between 1 July and 30 September. The full-year plan authorises €2 billion in repurchases.

Management has put its own money where its mouth is. Board member Rodrigo Francisco Diehl acquired Deutsche Telekom shares worth around €73,000, a transaction that signals internal conviction even as the stock trades well below its yearly peak. The share price currently sits at €27.22, up 1.95% on the day, but still more than a fifth below the 52-week high of €34.35 reached in late February. It also remains under the 50-day moving average of €27.31 — a technical level that could make the buybacks look timely from a valuation perspective.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

Analysts see further upside. UBS’s Polo Tang reaffirmed a “Buy” rating on 13 July with a price target of €36.20, pointing to solid momentum in Deutsche Telekom’s domestic business and at T-Mobile US. The American subsidiary recently expanded its own buyback authorisation to as much as $18.2 billion, giving the group’s capital-return strategy an extra layer of firepower.

The operational backdrop remains stable. First-quarter results released on 13 May showed the company on track, while CEO Tim Höttges reiterated the focus on artificial intelligence integration and disciplined capital allocation. Shareholders approved a dividend of €1.00 per share for fiscal 2025 at the April annual meeting, amounting to a total payout of €4.8 billion. On the labour front, Deutsche Telekom struck a wage deal with the ver.di union at the end of May covering roughly 60,000 employees, bundling salary increases with job protection after nationwide warning strikes.

Investors now turn to the next catalysts. Second-quarter and first-half results are due on 6 August, followed by third-quarter figures on 5 November. In the meantime, weekly buyback disclosures will keep the market informed on how quickly the company is retiring its own stock — and how much confidence the board has in the current price level.
