The German telecom giant is simultaneously laying the groundwork for unhackable communications networks and weathering the biggest pricing overhaul in its US unit's history. While the stock has clawed back from its June lows, the recovery faces a critical test when T-Mobile US reports quarterly earnings on July 23.

Deutsche Telekom's share price has been on a rollercoaster this year. After touching an annual high of €34.35 on February 27, the stock plunged to a low of €23.54 on June 30 as fears of satellite competition from US players emerged. The selloff erased more than a fifth of the market value in four months. Since then, the shares have recovered about 13% from the trough, recently changing hands around €26.68 — still 22.3% below the peak. The market capitalization stands at €122.6 billion, and the annualized 30-day volatility of 31.35% underscores persistent uncertainty.

The immediate pressure point is T-Mobile US. In July, the subsidiary is migrating over 8 million customers from legacy plans onto its more expensive "Experience" tariffs, with monthly bills rising by up to six dollars and an average of four. This marks the third price increase of 2026 for the US operator. Rivals AT&T and Verizon are running aggressive win-back campaigns to lure defectors, making the pricing strategy a high-stakes gamble. The first real evidence of its impact will come with T-Mobile US' second-quarter earnings release on July 23, followed by Deutsche Telekom's own numbers on August 6.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

Despite the near-term headwinds, UBS reaffirmed its buy rating on the stock with a price target of €36.20, well above the current level and even the year's high. For those betting on a continued rebound, a BNP Paribas call warrant with a strike of €27 and a September 8 maturity was recently quoted at €1.29–€1.31. Yet technical indicators paint a cautious picture: the shares trade 2.47% below their 50-day moving average of €27.36 and 7.17% below the 200-day average of €28.74, while the relative strength index near 52 signals neutral ground.

Away from the stock's gyrations, Deutsche Telekom is building out its future technology arsenal. The company is coordinating the pan-European quantum communication infrastructure project PETRUS2 alongside Thales, the Austrian Institute of Technology, Airbus, and SES, with the goal of establishing a sovereign European quantum network (EuroQCI). A sister project, HarmoniQCI, focuses on standardization and interoperability. The urgency stems from the "harvest now, decrypt later" threat — where encrypted data is intercepted today with the expectation that future quantum computers could crack it. Germany's BSI has advised corporate transition to post-quantum cryptography by 2030.

On a more earthly front, the group partnered with Ericsson to build a private 5G campus network for HHLA at the Container Terminal Altenwerder in Hamburg, supporting automated terminal operations since late May. Meanwhile, the company issued a seasonal warning about smartphone thefts during the travel season, noting a spike in phishing SMS where criminals pose as finders to steal Apple ID or Google account credentials.

The contrast between the long-term technological push and the short-term commercial challenge at T-Mobile US encapsulates Deutsche Telekom's current position. The UBS target of €36.20 implies a 36% upside from recent levels, but bridging that gap requires both a successful tariff transition in America and sustained investment in next-generation networks at home. For now, the market is watching the US earnings line — and the quantum horizon.
